With the epidermic problem now at full swing, both Eigetsu and Shuurei are working on the situation in order to make sure that the disturbance, as well as the evil cult that was spreading rumors, would be removed as soon as possible. The episode also starts off with the meeting with Taiyou, the governor for the Ko province. Shuurei was invited in the last episode by Taiyou, and she was not sure what will actually happen. What will Ensei do too, considering how Eigetsu had ridden off alone without informing anyone other than Kourin?
“晴天霹雳” is the Chinese translation for this episode and it means that something dramatic had suddenly appeared in a period of peace and quiet. I guess that means the feeling that Shuurei felt when she realized the truth about some things.
This episode finally answers the big question on how the disease actually spreads. To keep you wondering, it is in fact something really simple yet opens up more questions.
Episode summary

Shuurei met with Taiyou, who cut off her introduction by calling her Kou Shuurei first and praised her that he was honored to have such a wonderful lady in the same role as him. Shuurei then remembered about the tale about how Taiyou might be able to charm her if he was thirty years younger as she blushed. Taiyou gave some local delicacy (Yam cake?) as Shuurei asked whether Taiyou knew about Eigetsu. He said he once housed Eigetsu when he was about to take his imperial exams and Taiyou was his guarantor. Eigetsu brought a letter from the Doushu and Taiyou said that the two were the only survivors of a serious epidermic in their town.
Taiyou informed Shuurei that he was asked by the benefactor to pass Shuurei something. Taiyou then re-accounted the tale of Eigetsu’s benefactor coming over weakened, carrying a heavy bag to him. He had written a set of medical books, and while Shuurei looked at the box of books, Taiyou said the reason why it was passed to Shuurei was because Eigetsu had little time left in the world. Hence, the benefactor wanted to pass his and Eigetsu’s dream of saving lives to Shuurei, the other governor. The benefactor also passed a message that he thanked Shuurei because he was worried that Eigetsu would become alone once again but Shuurei alleviated that. The benefactor also said that Eigetsu would disappear from this world very soon.
Shuurei finally realized why Eigetsu was saying strange words when she was in Sa province about life being short. Taiyou also noted that after the benefactor passed the books, the benefactor looked extremely pale and had this calm smile as he said that he had achieved everything he wanted. When Taiyou brought back a doctor for him, the benefactor was gone and Taiyou felt that the benefactor’s chances of survival at that state was very low. A messenger came in and passed Shuurei two letters, as the letters had a special seal. The letters were the ones sent by Ensei and Eigetsu, as Shuurei was informed about the epidermic that was spreading in Houling town and that Eigetsu was going there alone. There was also word of a cult spreading rumors, and the leader’s name was Senya.
Shuurei then passed the order to the messenger, telling him to pass the two letters to the emperor, as well as requesting all the great doctors of the imperial palace to gather, saying that it was an emergency situation. Shuurei then looked at the books, saying that it was almost like fate played by the gods and thanked Taiyou for bringing the books. She then asked Taiyou whether he would resume to be the next governor of Sa, if something was to happen, and he readily agreed to her offer as he wrote a letter to confirm the words.

At Sa Province, Ensei was complaining how Eigetsu left on its own, leaving him to do a hell lot of administrative work. Sai Shou scolded Ensei for being whiny, and said that with the surrounding towns around the infected town seemingly showing the same symptons, the medical supplies were not enough at all and they would require the help of the merchant guild to loan some cash. When Ensei joked that he would pay them in the next generation, Sai Shou told him to find a solution immediately and Sai Shou continued that the towns there tended to be exclusive from civilization, quietly hoping for this disease to disappear. He went on with an old tale about a monster appearing in the water front.
Eigetsu met up with Hai Taishi, as Hai immediately asked why Eigetsu was so rash to come alone. However, Eigetsu said that he had some clues about the disease, and it was better for him to be around. Eigetsu told the officials that the disease seemed to spread when winter came earlier, with the sight of a snow fox. One official said that the snow fox was wary of strangers and seldom appeared to men. Eigetsu re-accounted a tale he remembered when he was young about a monster in the water, as he questioned that there might be a possibility that something might be dropped into the water.
Eigetsu said that it was probably the water source of the town, and as the towns were small in size, the water source in terms of the well and river would be at the same place. It was clear from the disease that it was not contagious, and it might be possible that if someone had drank the water which was contaminated. That was why Eigetsu told all of them to boil water first in order to get rid of the germs or bacteria in the water. He also said that there was a way to cure this disease, as his benefactor said in a flashback that he would find a cure. Hai Taishi then informed that doctors from the palace would come soon, and Shuurei would not be with them, with Eigetsu surprised that Shuurei would not be coming. Ensei seemed to say that there was no need for Shuurei to come.
Youshun was reading the letter and it seemed that the cult was blaming the coming of the epidermic to the appointment of the first female official in Sa Province. Shuurei said that it was so stupidly ridiculous, but Youshun said that it was the ridiculous things that would be easily accepted by a desperate group of people who wanted to save their own lives to believe everything that was said. Youshun said that even if the situation was that if she was not able to alleviate the fear and gain the trust of her people, and convinced that her appointment was not the cause of the winter epidermic, it would be her fault.
The head doctor from Tai Chang Hall arrived to the scene, as Shuurei wasted no time in passing the books written by Eigetsu’s benefactor. As Shuurei described the symptoms, To Roshi recognized it and heard of it before. She also acknowledged To Roshi, a doctor who took care of her when she was poisoned by Sa Enjun. After reading the book, Eigetsu’s benefactor was in fact Kashin, a very famous genius in medicine who refused to be the emperor’s personal doctor. Shuurei then told the head doctor that she required imperial doctors to be sent immediately to Sa province. He was unconvinced and said it was not done before, until Shuurei ordered him using her authority to convince him. Youshun also added the horses were prepared for them. Eigetsu, on the other hand was leaving and told Hai Taishi that Shuurei would definitely arrive, and that he promised Hai Taishi that he would try his best to survive.
Thoughts

I fully applaud this episode wholeheartedly. I was fully expecting the disease to be somewhat of a mystical origin, but it seemed that it might be likely that it’s more of germs/bacteria that is spread as it entered the water source. Even though it was merely a possibility, I think that the fact that it brings back to a more realistic and intelligent setting makes the problem more of a medicinal problem rather than one that required some form of divine help.
In a way, it is very impressive of the story, and I do want to know what Eigetsu meant, when he said “I do have a solution to get rid of the disease” in a very grave tone. The very fact that Eigetsu is not going to live much longer makes me wonder what form of miracle will come to him in order for him to survive, or that Saiunkoku Monogatari will actually lose the first main protagonist of the show. I genuinely hope that it is not the case but somehow, my gut feeling tells me that he is not going to die.
I have no reason for the gut feeling but logic tells me if a character is given a countdown time for him to no longer exist in the world, there will always somehow have a miracle for it to prevent the situation from happening. Call it plot power, but I somehow just feel that Eigetsu’s death will be too premature.
On the rumors of the cult, I believe that I am going to make a turnabout and say that Senya is in fact not Sakujun. Sakujun is definitely not a malicious person toward Shuurei and the treatment used in the rumors by the cult toward the villagers in the affected region does not seem logical for a person like Sakujun. As much as he has a woeful and malignant heart, he is definitely in love with Shuurei and to use the logic that Shuurei had brought the epidermic to them is very un-Sakujun.
Hence, it might be possible that this “Senya” is perhaps the real Senya, in which Sakujun had stole his identity. I am surprised it took me so long before I realized my mistake but I guess the thing about the mysterious cult got me misled until the details about the cult are revealed in this episode. I also find out that Shuurei will have a lot to do in order to relief the worry from these exclusive villages and towns, as they are generally not outreached. I also wonder how they are going to catch this cult, considering that it is probably deep within the mountains, totally out of touch with civilization.
On random notes, I am extremely impressed with Shuurei’s exertion of power as her role of Sa governor toward the head doctor. I think even the head doctor must be surprised at how much Shuurei’s voice and intonation suddenly changed so sternly. Youshun’s added push is just overkill. Ensei is also equally amusing with Sai Shou who can be considered to be somewhat of a comical relief for this episode. The laughter for the past few episodes suddenly disappeared as we entered the main plot.
That’s it for this episode, and next episode seems to be the continuation into the main plot. Rock on!

“I have no reason for the gut feeling but logic tells me if a character is given a countdown time for him to no longer exist in the world, there will always somehow have a miracle for it to prevent the situation from happening.”
That may be, but I don’t believe Saiunkoku Monogatari is cheaply written like that. I don’t really think that Eigetsu will remain perfectly fine when everything is over, unfortunately. A good example of a character in an anime who was given a countdown and died afterwards is Fantine from Les Miserables.
Still, after having said that, I must thank you a lot for this summary. This episode was just one huge dialogue, and I’m really glad that your summary shed a bit of light into it. ![]()
hmmmm…. I used to think it was Sakujun cuz the name is too much of a coincidence… the whole ‘Senya’ thing about the cult guy being the original Senya seems stretched somehow I think since the guy didn’t even know Shuurei so theres really no point in him spreading rumors about her being the source of the epidemic. I still have bets that its Sakujun-
a: His body wasn’t found
b: Its just like anime series like this to bring back a villian
c: Maybe he came back for Shuurei after she’s not the governor anymore?
The summary really helped so thanks! I don’t understand japanese but I do understand 3/4 of simplified chinese so the english summary really helped!

BlueSkyHeaven added these pithy words on May 12 07 at 1:04 pmHey thanx again with out this i would have no understanding of whats happening in the raws.
hmm abt Eigetsu i think ppl should keep watching. ahh this has got so good i cant wait for the next ep
raincloud added these pithy words on May 12 07 at 1:35 pmHey me again! As always still waiting for the episode to download but couldn’t help but drop a line after reading the comments above.
BlueSkyHeaven said :”Maybe he came back for Shuurei after she’s not the governor anymore?”
I am sure wont give up just because of that silly rumour and also they could argue that the same disease has happened before, long before she was governor…how is anyone going to explain that?
Also i agree with Impz on the Seiya not being Sakujun argument. Maybe it was just a trick to make us think that he was back. But on the other hand, the fact that his body hasnt been discovered is quite unsettling…maybe he is still alive and will save the day? haha.
Anyway, this season has turned really serious and not much lovey-dovey or funny situations (BRING BACK REISHIN!!). Cant’wait!
This episode is just great with revealing information about the source of the epidemic. Thanks for your summary.
simplyelena added these pithy words on May 12 07 at 3:32 pmThank you again so much for the summary!
Also what did Taiyou say to himself right after Shuurei left the room?
Heather added these pithy words on May 12 07 at 4:06 pmHmm… I believe ‘Taiyou’ should rather be ‘Kai You’… hehe ^^;;
anyways, what he mentions is that ‘there’s no way he can decline a woman’s invitation to drink tea with him)’ ![]()
I’m very interested to see the cult they were all talking about already. Looks like they hate Shuurei XD I also think it’s a different Senya, but I really want to see Sakujun again. -_- I want him back darn it! lol
I think I would’ve been so bored watching this since there are no Ryuuki or Seiran in this episode :’(, but reading summaries makes it less painful. I wish the show gets more interesting. Somehow, I want season 2 to surpass season 1. ^.^
Maybe the disease in Seikei village is Cholera. Eigetsu has Cholera hahaha
Ricaryx added these pithy words on May 13 07 at 5:10 pm@psgels: Perhaps. However, to see Eigetsu dying is a very painful thought for me, since I really like Kourin and Eigetsu together. To imagine Kourin in such pain is disturbing and I never want Kourin to see the corpse of Eigetsu. She will really lose it.
@BlueSkyHeaven: You know, in an earlier episode, I mentioned that Ryuuren might be the one that will be the wild card. I believe, with the factors that you have mentioned, that Sakujun will quietly help beneath the covers to fight this “Senya”
@Raincloud: Heh, no problem at all! I hope you enjoyed it.
@Kuri: You have to remember that it is obviously a very dumb idea that should not be believed. However, the villages are secluded, defenseless and they have no way to protect themselves away. The feeling of being lost is scary.
When a group of people (the cult) gives them a glimpse of hope in blaming Shuurei, it can turn a sane and logical man crazy. As said in the anime, even a ludicrous claim in desperate times sound like the most believable truth.
@Simplyelena, Heather: No problem at all, Usajigen answered it for me already ^+^
@Ricaryx: Well, I doubt they hate Shuurei too much. I believe it’s more of trying to take as much as an advantage toward the villagers as they can. Cults stoop at literally nothing to achieve what they want and they do not really care who’s the victim.
I also believe that the disease might be cholera. Let us analyze the symptoms one by one….
1. Cholera has been noted previously to be of human transmission but evidence has shown that it is more due to an aquatic transmission.
2. The symptoms described in the anime like fever, stomach swollening and stomach pains all seems like it.
3. Cholera is easily eliminated with boiling of water, and the other towns who did so are not affected.
The thing about Cholera is that I am not sure how it transmits into the water. I guess with dirty water in terms of the winter fox depositing feces and the likes will cause it to happen ![]()
hehehe…I know what happens to Eigetsu…hehehe…anyway, thanx for the new update! I do have the suspicion that someday at somepoint, Sakujun will come back…he left on a too mysterious and unfinished note not to, and they spent too much time developing his character.
Atrilial added these pithy words on May 14 07 at 12:01 amI also think that Eigetsu will die… but of course it’s not completely certain at this point (unless I give in to this temptation to read the novel! ^^;; )
and about the disease… At first I thought it was due to some mystical phenomenon, with the snow fox and the cult… lol :p
it might be cholera, although I’m not quite knowledgeable with this disease either ^^;;
usagijen added these pithy words on May 14 07 at 1:19 am@Atrilial: Don’t spoil me!!!! ^+^ Heh, I feel that Sakujun has to return, but I have a feeling that the helpful yet as usual malicious Sakujun will be on Shuurei’s side. I really pity the more dreadful foe that wants to try hurting Shuurei. I definitely do not want to be the opponent of both Seiran and Sakujun. Very bad combination if you ask me.
@Usajigen: I hope that what you think it is wrong. At first, I also thought it was due to some mystical reason but I do like this explanation much better than one of a magical origin. It makes it more realistic and logical to deal with, and I have an idea it has to do with cholera, especially when there is little sanitation in those towns and the towns are not taught about such ways for water sanitation.
Since the snow fox is about the only animal that roams in those mountain regions and is shy, it is possible that they spread the disease when they drink water from the same water source and spread it via the aquatic environment.
Impz added these pithy words on May 14 07 at 6:26 amfirst off, i want to be one of the many fans to tell you arigatou gozaimasu! i have your page bookmarked as a favorite and it is such a joy reading this every week… getting the lowdown on my favorite anime.
your episode summaries are great. there is none like it on the internet and i am glad i found it. your thoughts are very insightful as well ^_^
i really do hope that eigetsu won’t die, he’s such a great character. that’s what sux about following an anime that is still in production.
kimichan added these pithy words on May 14 07 at 12:28 pmFirst off , thank you so much for your wonderful reviews ;_;!
Since I’m waiting for a fansub group to pick this project up , your reviews are a perfect replacement for now.
I think , as was mentioned in another comment , that indeed Eigetsu will perhaps live , but won’t be the same as he was before , in my opinion perhaps his other half would take over him completely , but then again , Anime series have the regular idea of killing good characters , so I won’t be surprised if such thing happens and he will die. T_T
I miss Sakujun in the show , now that he’s disappeared (yes , disappeared , NOT dead , just..gone for a while xD) Saiunkoku doesn’t seem to be the same without him.(Shuurei should wear her hair down =O)
I still keep finding myself wanting Shuurei to be paired up or with Ryuuki or with Sakujun . *Sigh*
Still, I keep wondering mostly what lies behind that mask of that man (forgot his name) whom everyone thought he’s ugly but he’s actually wearing a mask because he’s unbearably beautiful. Hehe.
Celestial added these pithy words on May 14 07 at 4:56 pm@Kimichan: I am glad that my episode summaries are helping, and to have someone tell me that it is a joy to read it delights me more than anything. Hah, it’s sad that I do not have that much time to spend on writing any more series other than Saimono and Bokurano. Work is a bitch at times
Eigetsu is a really wonderful character but in a way, it’s good because you start thinking and wondering what is happening rather than going like “hmmm, next episode, click, oh the answer”. Not cool huh?
@Celestial: To me, if Yougetsu remains, it is really not the same. I guess in a way, Eigetsu is perhaps one of the main side characters. We really know little of him and he’s close enough to have that emotional attachment to the audience for him to be killed. It will be crap if he does. My KOURIN!
Sakujun is just so disturbing that I want him to be in the good side and kicking some major ass for Shuurei. yes, I am very queer but having an evil good guy is just quite impressive and interesting for me. Hah, you should also be a matchmaker, and why is there no Seiran there?
Kou Kijin is never thought about others to be ugly, just queer. The few people who knows it know that he’s extremely beautiful. I doubt that you will ever have a chance to see him. It’s really hard to present a face that is crazily beautiful, no?
Impz added these pithy words on May 15 07 at 3:18 amGah!!! I agree with the people that hope Sakujun would come ack to help Shuurei and it would be interesting to see Reishin again. He is the ULTIMATE comic relief and rocks. My idea earlier about Sakujun was a crazy one but yet I can’t help but hope he comes back to Saiunkoku. I think theres a deeper meaning in his disappearence and I can’t wait to see who the guy in the funny cult clothes really is.
BlueSkyHeaven added these pithy words on May 15 07 at 11:13 am@BSH: I believe in how you explained it as well. In a way, most of the deaths in the series is often somewhat shown, in which the body is seen to die off. However, Sakujun’s “death”, by any standards is somewhat defined with the disappearance of his body.
I feel that he will have a deeper significance in the future of the story, perhaps a shadow existence to quietly help Shuurei since he no longer has the burden of the Sa clan behind him anymore.
Impz added these pithy words on May 15 07 at 11:16 amTrue , it won’t be the same , but they bluntly said in the show that he’ll die , then maybe a part of him truly will , or maybe the opposite will happen and yougetsu would disappear?
The problem with Sakujun not being dead is that Shurrei seems to be attracted to him the most , and I don’t think he’s supposed to be one of the main characters , maybe I’m wrong..>_
Eigetsu’s death will most likely be ‘figurative’ death (or ‘personality’ death, as bootoye mentioned in my Saiunkoku post). I myself am hoping that Eigetsu won’t ‘die’, it just seems to be a certain ‘fact’ known by most people (Eigetsu himself, Yougetsu, and the mysterious ‘doctor’), so it’s hard to say that it won’t happen… but well, I’m open to whatever surprises there are with regards to how this will turn into
About the disease… there’s also a possibility of it being typhoid, given the improper sanitation they have and all… and I believe cholera and typhoid are closely related diseases as well o_o
usagijen added these pithy words on May 15 07 at 8:26 pmI hate when Ryuuki doesn’t show in the episode. He is my favourite character and I hope we will see more actions involving him.
Shuurei is annoying, she is too wonderful. So I can’t stand watching all men falling for her. I was so happy when Sakujun Sa wanted to ravish Shuurei, because after that Ryuuki would gave up on her:) Ryuuki waits for her but it is fruitless, she prefers men like Sakujun. What is more, Shuure haven’t ever thought that Emperor’d helped her a lot, mainly because he loves her. She’s cheated on him a few times, but he’s never thought about any othe woman. She isn’t gratefull, only thanks to Ryuuki she became offical and the province governor. It would be better if she were just poor high class girl.
I hope that in the next few episodes the new female character will show. Someone who is as intelligent as Shuurei but isn’t as pitiful as her. I don’t understand why we don’t see any new female chacters, it seems that Shuurei is the only female who is wonderful in the whole country.
saner added these pithy words on May 20 07 at 3:40 am@Saner: I believe that Shuurei did not really like Sakujun, but is more like a crush toward him due to the intense charm that he does create. Nevertheless, the ending of the first season clearly shows that the feeling between the two of them is mutual, but Shuurei wants to work out her niche as an official before love affairs come into play. The bad experiences in her parents’ relationship is perhaps a huge trauma to her toward relationships in general.
There are in fact many capable women, and I do not think that Shuurei has no ability at all. The fact is that Ryuuki did play a part in making the exception for women, but without Shuurei being a good official, nothing can happen.
To add on, I do not think that Shuurei has cheated at all. However, episode 7 might shine more light into the good things about Shuurei.
Impz added these pithy words on May 20 07 at 5:13 am@Impz:
The feeling between Shuurei and Ryuuki isn’t mutual. She hardly thought about him when she was in Sa, what is more she hasn’t even thought about him when she returned to capital, in comparison to Seirin who thought and visited him. She has never thought about Ryuuki feelings.
Which capable women are you thinking about? Can we any see any contenders? Shuurei is treated like a goddess. Everyone loves her, wants to merry her, isn’t it too perfect? I hope she will be ravished or something bad will happen to her:)
Personnaly, I don’t care about what is going on with Shuurei. The plot mainly concentrate what kind of hardship female official face. Isn’t it too simply for her? Without clear help from her family she isn’t harrassed at all. We will just see more and more her overcoming obstacles. From time to time we will see countless men talking about her beauty and marriage proposals. Sometimes someone (who will turn out be a good guy like Sakujun) will try to rape her, nothing more.
My favourite character is Ryuuki. He has got much more problems than Shuurei. He is the Emperor, however he is only sitting and not doing anything except signing documents, is it a joke? There aren’t any women trying to contact him.
In the first episodes of the second series Ryuuki didn’t have screen time at all. Is his life so unintresting? Isn’t he treated like a prisoner? it is another joke.
saner added these pithy words on May 20 07 at 6:30 am@Saner: Well, there is perhaps no real balance in terms of love. I do not disagree that Ryuuki’s love toward Shuurei is definitely much stronger compared to what Shuurei feels. However, during the Sa arc, it is something of a serious event and any girl getting the physical advances of such a hot and charming man like Sakujun will waver. Of course, Ryuuki’s love is perhaps a bit too pure for any human to ever match up with, but Shuurei’s constant thoughts of Sakujun reminding her of Ryuuki shows that there is somewhat a feeling. Shuurei never thought about love though, so it’s a little unfair with the background knowledge of her fear about love to say that she does not care. Rather than saying she does not care, it’s more like she does not know how to display it.
Many women are capable, including Shunki, Eiki, Sai Rin and Kourin. All of them are very strong characters with talents that cannot be overstated. I also believe Shusui’s maturity had provided an impetus toward Shouka’s heart while Kochou-neesan (the red light district gang head) had shown time and time again how she can control the dark powers with a tight rein.
It’s probably quite hard to determine who has much more problems. For one, Ryuuki is the emperor, and he is working hard in order to make sure the kingdom works. I think he is also somewhat not wanting any women in his life as yet, since the kingdom is just stabilizing after he finally resumed power. With that, there is often a lot of work, and i think he has no time to sleep much less women trying to contact him.
Wow, and you really hate Shuurei huh
Heh, I quite like her because other than her thick skull in romance (i share the same anger like you), she does have courage to break through the ranks of patriarchal control to do things that even men would not dare to do. That, to me, makes me admire her enough already.
@Impz
There are no girl around Shuurei age who can be her contenders.
Maybe if there are less people talking how Shuurei wonderful is I will be able to watch this series, at least from time to time Ryuuki will appear:)
saner added these pithy words on May 20 07 at 10:36 amokay so the cult leader’s name is senya right? well the person who sakujun was pretending to be (this is if the senya is the same one), didn’t he get killed? because in the first season, sakujun said his name was like lin/rin senya or something like that and when shuurei was telling the merchants she wanted to say goodbye to him, they told her the entire family had been killed and it was then she realized the sakujun wasn’t the person he was pretending to be. if the cult leader and the senya sakujun was pretending to be are the same, shouldn’t he be alive because the entire family was killed.
that’s just something i was wondering about but the two people might just have the same name and that’s all.
oops i meant shouldn’t he be dead?
peach blossom added these pithy words on Jul 01 07 at 10:01 amHmmm, Peach blossom, I think even though it’s highly possible that Sakujun has passed away, there are various issues with his death which makes his death suspicious. To add, many people might have the same name, but one that can wield reasonable power in Sa province are few. Hence, the relation of Senya and Sakujun is not that faroff.
To add, the use of the name can be of anything at all, but I cannot spoil anyone because the use of Senya as a name is critical to the plot in the future episodes (namely ep 12, which i just covered).
