Anno's comments are hypocritical and I wont defend them. (Not to mention lacking in courage, compared to his ex-colleague Takami Akai, who battled publically with otaku and lost his job at Gainax; I seriously doubt a lot of Japanese otaku are also subscribers to the Atlantic.) Nevertheless I still respect him as a storyteller in the work he did from Gunbuster to Kare Kano, and I credit my anime fandom to Evangelion. Anime directors are some of the last people I'd turn to for political and social commentary, and it's interesting how David Samuels (whose current Atlantic cover story is a long, critical account about Condi Rice) bought into the Eva propaganda hook, line, and sinker as a true barometer of modern Japan. A lot of your funny critique is really aimed less at Anno and more at Samuels' perception of Anno and Evangelion. He's a good writer but reading this article and his current one, I think he's clearly out of his depth on this issue. Oh well. Let him rant.
