Saiunkoku Monogatari II Episode 4 – “冬之

saimonoii4cover.jpg

This episode once again had so much subtle humor, and blatant fanservice (not the fleshy kind, but the type that you go “YES, SIRE!” makes it so darn funny that I found myself kicking my table and hurting myself in the process too. Reishin is central to many of the jokes in this episode, and for a huge Reishin fan like me, this is just godly. More will be revealed within the entry. I do apologize before hand for the length of the summary as there are quite a bit of details that cannot be omitted, and I am sorry if I bore you with too much writing.

Sigh, it’s a bad habit I have to eradicate.

The Chinese translation for the title is “”冬之

Reishin is just plain adorably dumb lol
he strongly (though wrongly) believes that if he reveals his identity to Shuurei that she’d hate him. Shouka was passed over by the clan in favor of Reishin to head the Kou Clan.
    Btw did you mean that Reishin would be her father-in-law if she married Kouyu? Because grandfather wouldn’t be right since Kouyu is Reishin’s adopted son ^^;

wow … what a wonderful beginning for the complex plot
well i wonder what Riou want from shuurei
    marriage? maho no ability?
    ghah its still mistery
lmpz do u have information how long this session will b last?
is there any possibility the anime have different sttory with the novel?

@Leenie: Him as in Riou? Don’t spoil me please!! Hahah, no problem with the detailed summary, I felt that I wrote a bit too much myself.

@Raincloud, Tae, Na2niet, Kishi: Glad it’s useful! If you have any views, do not hesistate to question my thoughts!

@Lady Kou: Ya, Reishing is really dumb sometimes in the way he thinks. I guess people with brilliant minds often think in rather warped ways. I think I got it wrong and Reishin is in fact her father-in-law. That teaches me never to write in too rushed a manner and I will correct it later.

Oh, thanks for the refreshing of my memory on that but I believe that his fear of it is unrequired since Shuurei is way too caring and not bothered about the politics of Kou to think of him in such a way. Well, that adds to his adorable factor.

@Saiichi: Riou is the bishie that appeared to Shuurei, the silver haired guy? The one that looks a little spectral.

@Nakaya: I actually have no clue. My first thought is marriage but that will mean that it’s a completely messy situation and it will totally amuse me. I do not read the novel and cannot answer that :P

Impz says: “Eigetsu did mention that it is not a contagious illness, and it does not manifest until the closing of winter.”

I will have to watch it again to be sure, but I think Eigetsu says that the illness can be prevented by avoiding contact between people. Which pretty much says that it IS contagious. I do agree totally that it has to be a supernaturally caused plague, or at least something that is caused deliberately by humans, because otherwise it would really come out of nowhere.

Youshun has so much experience dealing with Reishin and Kijin because they used to be very good friends / school mates when they were young, right? I get the impression that Youshun deals with Reishin like Kijin deals with Reishin, with a tolerance for his antics and endurance against his bullying.

I did find Reishin very cute this episode, but seriously the cutest I find is still Ryuuki, when he stood up so abruptly when Youshun says that he has experience dealing with Kijin and Reishin, and ask for Youshun to teach him how to deal with them. It seriously cracked my up. :D I so pity him for having to deal with these high maintainance guys… And you know, the more I watch Ryuuki, the more I find him even better looking. The artist has a way of drawing that makes the characters get even better looking after some time. (很

@Briar Eigetsu said that this disease can be prevented and it does not pass on around between people…? That’s what I get from the subtitles…

I love how the way Shuurei blurted out “Ara yada hohoho” when Hakumen questions her for being more concerned about the state of the flatten mikan rather than his well being after he was floored by said mikan threw by someone ^^; I am wildly guessing that Riou is one of the eight immortals (!) but I have no idea why he is setting his eyes on Shuurei…I also don’t get the Youshun part…maybe he has something up his sleeves that would be revealed later…

i saw the preview for the next episode when i watched the RAW version of episode 4.Is that Kouyuu the one laying in the snow??

  13. Posted April 30, 2007 at 5:29 am | Permalink

@Briar: Rewatching it, I find that my interpretation of the words seem to be right that it is in fact not contagious since it does not pass on to one person to the another in the line of text referring to that. It has to be supernatural though, because anything but that makes it rather impossible for merely a normal disease.

Yes, now that you reminded me, I think Youshun is in the same apprentice group with Kijin and I actually forgot cleanly about it, hahaha~

I do not know. I generally like characters like Reishin who are seemingly harsh on all people until you realize that he has in fact a weak spot in his relative. I just find that there is no need for a pretty face and fanservice for bishies since I am a guy. I could really care less for beautiful bishies!

@Wickhunter: Ya, I thought I am the only person that found that scene funny. When she did just that, I found myself laughing because it seems like a running joke against Hakumen, in which he is always looked over by everyone, including Shuurei. He just seems to be the token bullied personnel in the whole show.

Yes, Youshun’s actions make no sense. I mean, the merchant guild in the palace will be a very strong partner economically. Even though they are not part of the strong alliance required, how can it be “all right?”. I wondered if he has already found a sponsor.

@Polar Bear: Oh my, I did not take note but it DOES SEEM TO BE KOUYUU. wHY?????

Question: Do you think that Riou will be a malignant or benevolent person to Shuurei?

    Posted April 30, 2007 at 7:18 pm | Permalink

There has been more and more scenes of Reishin standing from afar and hiding to watch Shuurrei. I guess it’s not really a bad thing since it’s pretty humorous.

Imagine if Kouyuu and Shurrei actually got married. Reishin would probably creepily stalk them and severely interfere with their marriage life.

@ Impz and w1ckhunt3r: Oops. Sorry. :( Must have either read wrongly or something.

Impz asks: “Do you think that Riou will be a malignant or benevolent person to Shuurei?”

I think he’s a lot like Shakujun in this respect, that he’s fascinated with Shuurei but he isn’t necessarily a good person. I do agree with someone before that he may be one of the 8 sages/immortals, together with Shou Taishi and Sa Enjun. It will explain how Shou Taishi will recognize him.

Is Riou a spirit or ghost or what?I haven’t read the novels,so i can’t make any speculation about him except that he is a nice guy that help keep a damsel in distress warm. And i can’t seem to shake off the thought that he is similar to Sakujun.Should he is one of the 8 sages that will be interesting. But which province does he belongs too?

  17. Posted May 1, 2007 at 3:29 am | Permalink

@Sharpie: Of course, I can fully imagine Reishin fully manipulating the serious and silly Kouyuu to do everything in order to put himself in a good light.

Reishin: “Remember TO TELL SHUUREI how good your boss is in the civil department and that he works extremely hard everyday for the nation!”

    Kouyuu: “YES, FATHER!!!!”

Poor Kouyuu, he has a lot to deal with soon.

@Briar: I feel that he is very different from Sakujun. If anything, Sakujun had fallen in love with Shuurei from the very first time that they have met, and it’s apparent that even though he does have a scary side, that side is never shown to Shuurei as he tries all ways to gain her heart. He is good in which he always make sure that Shuurei will never be hurt by his actions directly, which earned me his respect.

The first sight of Riou, however, feels more like someone that is looking to play with Shuurei and force her to a corner as a pawn, nothing more. I have to agree that he’s part of the 8 sages/immortals, simply as his mysterious level and his strange spectral abilities make him hardly human.

I do wonder why Shou Taishi will know him and somehow, the knowledge/truth of Riou being one of the eight immortals does not seem compelling enough. He called him kid too, which I feel a sage will have a bit more respect.

@Polar Bear: Me neither. I definitely disagree with you that he is a nice guy. A nice guy will never go near a pure maiden so close and touch her during their first meeting. A nice guy will never petrify a girl and cause her to be unable to move. I feel that the intentions of Sakujun and Riou are very different, despite their “evil” appearances.

From the above description it really feels like Riou is up to no good – or maybe he is just “testing” how worthy Shuurei and Ryuuki are (maybe he realy is one of the 8 immortals).

“Still, he does manage to make Reishin beg a little rather than be bullied, which also means that his ability to handle strange people is way better than Ryuuki.”
    - Well he well should be, after all he did “graduate” the same yr as those 2 (Rishin and Kijin) and from the flashbacks (eps 38?) it seems they have been friends forever – remember the peeking @ Shouka’s family from a tree incidence?
I dont thing Youshun minds the “bullying” to much, he just sees it as the way he behaves, a bit pushy..lol
Hopefully more will follow, cant wait for the next ep to see what Riou is planning!

I will have to stand with raws from now on because We-Suck Fansub has decided to stop subbing SaiMono season 2 after season 1 is licensed. They only released one episode.Wonder if Shadow-Dreams will continue it

Thank you so much for the summary! I am confused on one thing though. When Riou first appears to Shuurei, what is she saying? I really want to know why she looks so afraid.

I am so frustrated that the subs of season 2 have been dropped by We-Suck and no doubt Shadow Dreams will drop it too now since that is their policy as well. I wish I could understand Japanese. This is my favorite anime and having no english subs drives me crazy.

As to Shou Taishi calling Riou a kid, it could be that he is the youngest of the eight immortals. I don’t think he’s exactly evil though, but he does have an agenda of some sort, or then again he could just really admire Shuurei. :p

Angelwolf asks: “When Riou first appears to Shuurei, what is she saying? I really want to know why she looks so afraid. ”

She was saying that she couldn’t move, which is also when she was so afraid. :) As for why she couldn’t move, I think a lot of it is due to supernatural powers on Riou’s side.

  22. Posted May 4, 2007 at 4:26 am | Permalink

@Kuri: It’s perhaps to my own bias of sorts, but I do wonder what Riou is. Unlike Sakujun, Riou comes out and immediately scares the living lights out of Shuurei, which is scary.

Yep, Youshun does graduate together with Reishin and Kijin and they are perhaps somewhat friends from then, even though Reishin’s comments seem more like a threat than anything else. Still, there is definitely friendship, deep ones between the three of them.

@Polar Bear: *pats* i hope that my summary can at least explain a little. If there is anything that is unclear, i will be willing to try and help ^^

    Haha true Impz!
He is threatening to all of them..obviously counting Shurrei and Shouka out…lol. I just realized how funny Reishin was in this ep…the running away to work scene was hilarious!!!
Also i am still wondering how Shouka can be so inept @ housework when he is supposed to be the BEST assassin around…i mean there is a minimum for survival! Maybe it is just a cover – after all he IS the last person you would think that would be Black wolf! It seems like Reishin knows about it but Kurou was surprised @ Shouka’s Mikan “peeling skill”. You think he knows he is an assassin?

Thank you for your great summary as always Impz. I’ll still have to wait for a better raw version to come out :( .

  25. Posted May 5, 2007 at 10:31 am | Permalink

@Kuri: hehehe, well, I believe that it is the reason why Shusui is around. ho, ho, ho, we now know the reason for Shusui being inside the black wolf clan now, aren’t we.

I am sure that Kurou knows something about it but anyone who just saw this act of peeling the mikan will be surprised, even Reishin, I feel. However, I got a feeling that Reishin will go all blushing and boast about how cool Shouka is, not the kind of reaction that you want if you are anti-yaoi.

@Fuuka: no problem and good luck finding one!

Thanks indeed for the detailed summaries, now that it’s unlikely to be continued in fansubs I desperately need them.

Shadow has had lots of troubles with her computer as can be read on her livejournal, and whether she’ll get around to it is very much in the stars.
