Ghost Hunt: Some of the puzzle pieces not shown in the anime

Note: I have invited LKK to blog on some of the manga spoilers and plots that have not been included in the anime. I also added a few images from previous episodes to give a visual summary of the anime. Cheers!

Naru, Mai, Masako, dream!Naru … the Ghost Hunt anime ended without answering some major questions, didn’t it? It’s possible that Ghost Hunt may get a second season to explain the answers. It’s possible that Ghost Hunt may get an OVA release to explain the answers. However, nothing’s been announced yet. Impz has invited me to share some of what I know about the puzzle pieces left out of the jigsaw puzzle that is known as Ghost Hunt.

My information is based on the Ghost Hunt novels. I have not read the novels. I have collected this information from people scattered across the Internet who have read the novels. I confess that I no longer know from whom I got what information. I know that I owe a large debt of gratitude to the members of the LiveJournal community shibuya_pr and especially to Shadow Dreams who generously answered many of my questions. I do not guarantee that this information is 100% correct. I have tried my best though. All mistakes are my own. I apologize for them.

If you hope that Ghost Hunt will have a second season to answer the outstanding questions and do not wish to be spoiled, do not read this. If you hope that Ghost Hunt will receive the OVA treatment to answer the outstanding questions and do not wish to be spoiled, do not read this. If you hope that someday the manga will answer the outstanding questions and do not wish to be spoiled, do not read this.

About the novels, the manga, and the anime >>

There are ten Ghost Hunt novels. The first 8 books are collectively known as the Evil Spirits series. They are called this because the phrase “Evil Spirits” appear in each title. The 8 books cover 7 major SPR investigations. The last investigation spans 2 books but is a single case. These 8 books are told from Mai’s perspective and are written in the first person. These books are no longer in print in Japan.

Books 9 and 10 of the Ghost Hunt novels are sometimes called the White Heart series. This refers to the publisher’s catalogue listing and has little relation to the books themselves. Like books 7 and 8, books 9 and 10 cover a single investigation. Unlike the Evil Spirits series, which is written in the first person narrative, the White Heart series is written in the more common third person narrative. Books 9 and 10 are still in print in Japan; however, they are increasingly hard to find.

The manga covers the Evil Spirits series novels 1 through 6. To date, 9 volumes of the manga have been released in Japan, 6 in the USA. (Volume 7 will be released in the US in late March, early April.) A tenth manga volume was recently announced for Japanese publication, but that announcement was retracted. The manga has yet to cover the last case in the Evil Spirits series. This is significant because it is during this last case (novels seven and eight) that most of the questions regarding Naru and the vision of Naru appearing Mai’s dreams (”dream!Naru”) are answered.

The anime has stopped where the manga has stopped at novel #6.

There are also 4 CD dramas. The CDs changed some events and used information from more than one novel in some cases. Occasionally, the CDs invented scenes that were never in the novels. This is particularly true of CD drama #4. This summary uses information from the novels, not the CD dramas.

If you would like to see the covers of the novels, Wiki’s Japanese page for Ghost Hunt has the cover art embedded in its entry. Here is a Google-translated link to the page.

Before the series started >>

Naru is Japanese by ethnic heritage. He learned to speak Japanese at an early age from his mother. However, he wasn’t born, raised, or educated in Japan. Naru and his older brother were born in the USA. They were orphaned when they were young and placed in an American orphanage. Little information is known about their birth parents. The boys lived in the USA until Naru was 8 years old. At some point during this time, Martin and Luella Davis, a British couple, adopted the brothers. When Naru was 8, the family moved to England. Martin Davis is a psychic researcher with the British SPR organization. Luella Davis learned Japanese in order to understand what her sons were whispering to each other. It is not known if the boys’ given birth names were different from their given adopted names. After their adoption, the older brother’s name was Eugene J. A. Davis. Naru’s adopted name was Oliver E. C. Davis. At an early age, the brothers started calling each other by the traditional nicknames for Eugene and Oliver: Gene and Noll. Family and friends picked up the habit as well. Naru is the heavily accented Japanese pronunciation of Noll.

The anime removed all direct references to Eugene. However Bou-san and John do discuss him and his psychic abilities in the manga in addition to discussing Oliver Davis’. Everything that Bou-san and John said about Eugene’s and Oliver’s abilities is true. Here is recap of what has been said about the brothers in the manga as of volume 6. Eugene is a perfect medium. This means that when he channels a dead spirit, he speaks in the native language of the dead person whether he can speak the language himself. For example, if Eugene channeled the spirit of a German, he would speak in German. If he channeled the spirit of a Greek, he would speak in Greek.

Oliver is one of the few persons known to have both ESP and psychokinesis abilities. He is a psychometrist (the psychic ability to read both the past and the future) and a powerful PK-ST user (PK-ST: psychokinesis on stationary objects). He once demonstrated his PK-ST abilities in a lab under scientific testing where he smashed a 50-kilogram aluminum block into a wall. This demonstration was videotaped.

He once found the kidnapped son of an American millionaire. The boy had been buried alive. With Oliver’s help, he was rescued. Oliver’s doctorate degree was not earned through the traditional education system. Instead he was given the degree in recognition of his research accomplishments. There are some things about Gene and Noll that John and Bou-san either don’t know or haven’t mentioned in volumes 1 through 6. Their Japanese heritage and their adoption by the Davises are two things obviously. In addition, the following things have not been mentioned.

Oliver intended to earn a university degree through traditional means in addition to his honorary degree. He was accepted as a student to Cambridge Trinity College in England at age 15 but had not yet studied any course work. Gene is capable of performing exorcisms in addition to acting as a medium. Gene and Noll have a special telepathic connection. They are able to send each other psychic power.

Gene helps Noll control his PK powers. If Noll were to use a large amount of PK power generated from within himself alone, the power would be overwhelming for his body. To prevent that, Noll generates a seed of PK power that he transmits to Gene. Gene amplifies it and sends it back to Noll who amplifies it even more and sends to Gene again. The brothers continue bouncing and amplifying the PK energy back and forth until it reaches the sufficient energy level that Noll needs in order to accomplish what he wants to do. Then Noll unleashes the PK energy on the object he wants to move. Exactly how close to each other the brothers have to be in order for this PK bouncing to work is not known definitively. The White Heart novel series implies that they could bounce the PK energy to each other over distances.

Noll’s psychometric power can occasionally have a harmful effect on his body. However, the potential harm is different from when he uses his PK ability. If Noll synchronizes strongly with the person in his psychometric visions - in other words, if he experiences the vision as if he were actually involved - he might develop bruises or possibly go numb where the original person experienced injury. Fortunately, Noll has learned to control his visions such that he can stop them if they become too dangerous for him to witness.

The novels imply that the brothers have other psychic powers as well. However, these are not elaborated. Their mother strongly disapproves of the boys being used as psychic test subjects. Furthermore, the brothers aren’t interested in exploring those areas. Apparently those additional powers only work between the brothers and can not be used elsewhere.

Two more facts about the brothers have not been revealed. Gene and Noll are identical twins. Gene is dead.

Gene had been invited to Japan to perform an exorcism. While in Japan, he planned to visit some of the Japanese mediums in order to learn about their methods. During his trip, Gene was killed. Back in England, Noll decided to borrow some of Gene’s clothes. He experienced a pyschometric vision of Gene and eventually saw his death. (Whether he saw Gene’s death real time or shortly after it occurred is unclear. However, it’s likely that he saw it real time.) Noll sees the scene shortly before Gene’s death. He experiences Gene’s accident and eventual death. (The vision turns green. Prior experience taught Noll that when a vision turns green, that’s an indication of a vision of a dead person.)

Noll witnesses Gene being run over by a car. At this point, Gene is injured but still alive. A woman gets out of the car, sees what she has done, and panics. She gets back into her car and runs over Gene a second time killing him. After watching Gene’s death, Noll sees Gene’s body taken to a garage, wrapped in silver sheeting, and then thrown in a lake from a boat. The Japanese police were contacted. However, they could not find Gene’s body or his killer.

After the police had no results in finding Gene, Noll got the idea that perhaps he could find his twin’s body. Instead of attending university as he had planned, Noll asked his parents for permission to go to Japan to look. They agreed; however, they insist that someone accompany Noll since he is still a minor. Since Noll would be using SPR funds and backing, it made sense that someone from SPR accompany him. Madoka, the head of SPR fieldwork, gathered those people in SPR who could speak Japanese. Lin was asked to accompany Noll. Lin had known the brothers since they were children. He taught Noll how to use his PK. Gene was the one who told Lin that he didn’t want Lin to hate him because he was Japanese or an orphan.

Together Noll and Lin traveled to Japan and established the Japanese branch of SPR. They gave it the fake name Shibuya Psychic Research. (Mai’s paychecks are marked SPR, but she never thought about the implication of the letters rather than the supposed company name until it comes out in a discussion.) Noll adopted the name Kazuya Shibuya and shunned any publicity. Noll has a natural dislike of publicity. On top of that, Gene’s killer is still at large. The fact that Noll looks so much like Gene could possibly put him at risk as well. The twins look and sound exactly alike as long as both are expressionless.

Noll’s overriding focus in Japan is finding his brother’s body. To that end, he spends most of his time researching locations that his brother might have visited. (In the manga, Mai mentions that Naru is always studying maps. She says he goes off on “vacations” but doesn’t bring back any souvenirs.) Solving psychic mysteries is his secondary task. But a few months after arriving in Japan, one of those secondary tasks brings Noll into contact with Mai Taniyama.

During the series >>>

Here are a few random comments about events in the series that are not fully explained in the series.

** When “Kazuya Shibuya” tells Mai about his work as a psychic researcher and a ghost hunter in the hallway the day they first met, he comments that Mai has terrible pronunciation when she echoes the English words back to him. The anime removed this comment. However, Mai’s questionable English skills may have contributed to Oliver mistakenly believing that Mail called him “Noll” when she accidentally said “Naru-chan” aloud the first time.

** When Masako first met Naru, she thought he looked familiar and asked if they had met before. Naru said that they had not. He told the truth. They had never met. Later Masako realized why Naru looked familiar. Prior to the series start, she attended a conference of the American SPR branch. During the conference, ASPR showed the videotape of Oliver Davis’ PK demonstration. After meeting Naru in person, she remembered why he looked familiar and realized that Naru was in fact Oliver Davis. Masako told Naru that she knew who he really was. He asked her not to reveal his identity as a favor to him. This favor is the hold that Masako has over Naru.

** Naru did not need to use a large amount of PK energy to bend and break the spoon in the spoon-bending arc. However, when he and Mai fell into the sewer, they were in danger of landing on a large pile of broken rubble. During the fall, Naru used his PK to move the pile away from their landing spot. This lead to his collapse afterwards at the base.

** In the Forbidden Game arc, when Naru investigates the classroom with the horrible smell, he discretely uses his psychometric power. As he goes from the back of the classroom to the front, he touches several desks along the way. Then he suddenly asks if the students have been doing anything unusual in the classroom such as conducting a summoning. Naru asks the question because his psychometric visions have shown him scenes of students performing a kokkuri-san summoning.

** After Mai was found passed out from the fumes in the biology lab during the Forbidden Game arc, Lin carried her to the nurse’s office. Mai saw her rescue because she was having an out-of-body experience at the time. (Only after she realized that she was witnessing the event from outside her body did it occur to her that seeing the event from outside her body might not be a good thing.) Mai was disappointed that it was Lin who carried her to the clinic and not Naru although she did confess to herself that Naru might not have been able to carry her weight.

** In episode 23 during the scene outside the family shrine, Bou-san’s conversation with Mai implies that she told everyone that she dreamt of Naru talking about the sacred ground of the cave.

Masako: I once went to a place sacred to Native Americans, and this has a very similar feel. That was a holy place protected by spirits…
Mai: A place where souls go through?
Bou-san: Eh? Did Naru also say that in your dream?

Mai: Yeah. He said it in the cave — that it seemed like a place that souls got blown to.
{Episode 23, Shadows Dreams sub release.}

The direct reference to Naru is an anime addition. At this point, Mai is still unwilling to mention that Naru’s appearances in her dreams to the group as a whole.

** While Noll has been looking for Gene’s body, Gene has been trying to get in touch with Noll from the afterlife. Unfortunately, most of his time in afterlife is spent in a dream-like state. Gene feels as if he’s been chasing after Noll and is rarely lucid. On those occasions when he does “wake up” and gains some control of his thoughts, it’s always during one of Noll’s investigations. Gene can’t reach Noll telepathically like he could when he was alive. It’s as if Gene’s psychic antenna bent when he died or perhaps his psychic wavelength change. However, Gene finds that on those rare occasions when he’s awake, he is able contact a girl who is working with Noll, Mai Taniyama, who mistakes him for his brother.

Moving on to beyond the anime timeline >>>

The next investigation follows almost immediately after the last one in the anime. After Naru is released from the hospital, the gang begins their journey home. In transit, they pass by a site that resembles the lake area Naru saw in his psychometric vision of Gene’s death. Naru stops the journey home and hires divers to search the lake.

While they are waiting for the search results, they accept a case involving an old school house that was closed down. I do not know the specifics of the case. During the investigation, the fact that Naru is searching for his brother’s body is revealed. After the school house case is solved, the fact that Naru is Oliver Davis is revealed. Most of the men in the SPR gang suspected that Naru was Oliver Davis by now. Although there was some surprise at the revelation, everyone was more satisfied at finally knowing the answers because they were concerned that Naru might leave for England with his brother’s corpse without revealing the truth about himself. (Bou-san was teased about his idolizing Dr. Davis and about how he could easily ask for the doctor’s autograph now. Bou-san tried not to think about the whole situation.)

By this time, Mai has decided that dream!Naru is either a result of her subconscious or of Naru slipping out of his body. She does not suspect that it has been Gene visiting her. After his body is found, Gene visits her again. They meet in a forest area. He tells her that he was hoping he would be able to see her one last time. They talk some about Noll returning to England. Mai says that she can’t imagine what Naru’s life is like in England. Gene says that he’s just an idiot scientist. Mai is surprised at the comment because she believes that Naru is talking about himself. At the end of their conversation, Gene says that he had something he wanted to say to her, but he decides against saying it. Mai waits a bit and when she turns to tell him to just say it, she hears someone walking towards her. It’s Naru. When Mai looks back for dream!Naru (Gene), he’s gone. This is the last time that Mai sees Gene in the Evil Spirits series.

Although she isn’t sure if dream!Naru is a result of her subconscious or of Naru’s own powers, Mai never intended to tell him that she ever dreamed of him. She accidentally lets it slip during a later conversation though. Naru says that he cannot spirit travel and that he wasn’t visiting her dreams. Mai decides that the image of Naru in her dreams must have been a result of how she feels for Naru. However, Naru realizes that it was Gene visiting Mai’s dreams. True to his personality, Naru’s reaction to the realization is that his brother was being idiotic for wandering around in spirit form rather than moving on.

It is after this that Masako learns that it wasn’t Naru who visited her when she was Urado’s prisoner, it was Gene. Until Mai told her that Gene is the spectral dream!Naru, Masako believed it was Naru who came to her. Masako knew before the others that Gene was dead and that Naru was searching for his body. However, she did not know that the brothers were identical twins until Mai told her nor did she realize that the boy who came to her when she was held captive was Gene. Why Masako, the psychic medium, did not recognize Gene’s ghostly presence is unclear. The most likely explanation is that because she’s so stressed out, she wasn’t thinking clearly. (Gene never visited Masako’s dreams prior to that time and never visited them afterwards either.)

As Noll prepares to leave for England, Mai tells Naru that he should be more honest with himself and cry at the pain and sorrow Gene’s death. However, he says that everyone dies eventually and that in one hundred years, no one will be around. Mai finally confesses her feelings for him to him. Naru smiles slightly and asks her if she loves him or his brother. Mai starts crying. She’s realized that she never thought about why Naru often smiled in her dreams but rarely in real life. She never tried to see the real Naru. When she finally stops crying, she is surprised to see that Naru is still there. He tells her that she will see Gene again whether she wanted to or not. Mai asks if he means in 100 years like he said earlier. Naru answers that she might have 200 years to live.

At his farewell party before leaving for England, Naru gives Mai a photograph that his mother Luella had accidentally left behind during a visit to Japan. It’s a picture of Gene and him together. In the photograph, Naru is not wearing black.

This is where the Evil Spirits novel series ends. It’s my belief that the novelist intended the story to be finished at this point. I have no evidence of this. It’s just my opinion. I think the publishers pushed her into writing the next story due to the series’ popularity among the fans.

The next story starts about two months after Gene’s funeral. Naru and Lin have returned to Japan. The reason given is that Naru is interested in the supernatural and for some reason Japan has a lot of supernatural activity. Although Gene has been buried, Naru is still wearing black. Yasuhara has been hired as a part-time office worker. Mai is now a part-time investigator.

SPR accepts the case of a family that’s bothered by a haunted house. Unbeknownst to them, a Japanese police detective is working undercover as a member of the family. He is investigating Naru. The detective does not believe in the supernatural or the paranormal. He believes that since Naru knew where Gene’s body was located, Naru must have more knowledge about the murder than he has revealed. Naru might have been a part of the murder itself.

During the investigation, all of the usual SPR helpmates are eventually called in. (Bou-san, Ayako, Masako, John.) Mai begins to have her strange visions again. She has not had one since Naru left for England. Gene wakes up from his dream-like state and returns to Mai’s dreams. When dream!Naru returns, Mai asks if he is Gene. He confirms that he is. This upsets Mai because she thought that Gene would have moved on. (Everyone expected that to happen after Gene’s body was found.) Gene says that he doesn’t understand why he hasn’t moved on either but for some reason he’s stuck there.

In addition to visiting Mai’s dreams again, Gene has figured out a way to contact Noll as well. Actually, he had figured out a new way to contact Noll earlier; however, if Noll is not directing his attention to Gene, Noll won’t hear him. As the investigation reaches its conclusion, the twins make other discoveries about Gene’s altered abilities by relying on their instincts like they did as children. If Gene enters a mirror, he can see some of the real world through it. If Noll touches the mirror with Gene in it, they can toss Noll’s PK seed back and forth amplifying the PK power like they did when Gene was alive. With the case solved, the twins’ reunion comes to an end. Gene says that he’s getting sleepy again and fades from contact.

Still unresolved >>>

The novel series has left several questions still unanswered. Who was the woman who killed Gene? Is she ever found and brought to justice? Is Gene sleeping forever? Why didn’t Gene ever tell Mai who he really was or provide information that would help Noll find his body?

Does Mai ever really get over her love for Gene? Does Mai ever fall in love with someone else? Do her powers continue to grow? Or have they reached their full potential?

Does Naru become romantically involved with anyone? Does he remain in Japan now that he’s returned or return to England?

The last novel was published in the mid-1990s. It seemed as if the novel series is on permanent hiatus. Recently though, rumors surface that she may be working on the series again. These rumors are based on a comment she made during a question and answer interview published by Tokyopop. When asked what she was currently working on, she said that she was reworking an old girls’ horror series that she had written. Hopefully that old series is Ghost Hunt and she will give us more information about Mai, Naru, and company some day.

Ooh thanks for this entry - everthing makes so much more sense now! Was quite confused still by all the unanswered questions and have started collecting the manga in the hope of eventual answers! Fingers crossed for an OVA or second series for closure on the anime.

I love you. In that “omgthnx” kind of way lol! I’m the kind of person who likes to read the last page in a book to see if its a “happy” or “sad” ending (pathetic happy ending person) so this is really helpful! Definetlly helped any future confusions and mind-explosions that could’ve occured if I had no idea what was going on. So thank you very much for these detailed explanations! I look forward to the continuation of the anime/manga/novel series! I would have never guessed that the series was this detailed and deep! Thank you!

  6. mokokits April 5th, 2007 2:41 pm

Wow! Thanks so much! This helps clear up my,”What the heck happened!”, feeling. I didnt know that this series was “old”, er … on hiatus, I thought it was ongoing. hehe, Well thanks anyways! Helps a lot!

    (((HUGS)))

    Thank you so much!!!

Hehe after all that speculating its nice to finally put some theories to rest.

It was defintely nice to find out about Dream Naru ^-^

  8. na2niet April 5th, 2007 4:11 pm

@Impz,I give you a big hug!for revealing this one!I was very disappointed about the ending of GH,but with this summary!at least you filling up the pieces thats missing!thank you very, very, very much!Dank U

-But why that Gene hug Mai?
-And how can you explain the scene in Ep 22,while Mai is dreaming that she’s running and end-up seeing Gene(dream-naru)and he says like this
    *Gene says,I Kill him
    *Mai says,Why.
*Gene says,”it couldn’t help, when we arrived this guy was here…!so I thought you’d betrayed me.
I don’t understand that also if along he was the twin of Naru why he says that?why he show that he’s killing that gut to Mai?
-but again thanks,I like that Naru-chan hug mai In front of cute Masako!hmmm,I’m curious?

@13sugars,@D.J,you can give me punishment for arguing you guys before regarding The dream-naru!”you can say your not welcome here anymore”!huh, huh, huh, that dream-naru is indeed a twin of Naru-chan,not only that I also disagree about Dr.Davis!as of now I feel that I’m the culprit here!regards

  9. D.J April 5th, 2007 5:33 pm

@na2niet, in that dream Mai isn’t herself per se and neither is Gene. They are reenacting something that occurred in the past. Kind of like in the Urado arc when Mai was experiencing the death of one of Urado’s victims.

LOL no punishment silly! Its been fun discussing this anime whether we’ve agreed or not.

Hmm I’d like to believe though, that Mai is in love with Naru not Gene. After all she seems to like him just as much in RL as she does Gene in her dreams, despite Naru’s narcissm LOL.

I just think that finding out it wasn’t actually Naru in her dreams confused her feelings. But really she’s around Naru more than Gene. So I think if she really had time to ponder on it, she’d realize its Naru she loves of course.

Of course you know I HAD to say that Impzy MAI x NARU forever!!!!

  10. ohphive April 5th, 2007 8:03 pm

I was gonna control myself and faithfully wait for a second season…but I have no selfcontrol :/

Thanks LKK so much for the detailed spoiler. If you didn’t write this up I wouldn’t know where else to look for this kind of information.

“Gene and Noll are identical twins. Gene is dead.” “Noll sees the scene shortly before Gene’s death. He experiences Gene’s accident and eventual death. ”

I can’t believe I was right about that!!! I pay my gratitude to all the Detective Conan I’ve watched. “There is only one truth!”

I honestly didn’t expect Naru to be Oliver Davis. I didn’t think a 17yr-old could have a doctorate degree…But I guess this IS a fiction about people with supernatural abilities, anything can happen if the author so desires.

“Mai finally confesses her feelings for him to him. Naru smiles slightly and asks her if she loves him or his brother. Mai starts crying. She’s realized that she never thought about why Naru often smiled in her dreams but rarely in real life. She never tried to see the real Naru.”

When I read that part, for some reason, I almost started tearing up. I’m not quite sure why, but I guess I was sorta picturing Naru having developed feelings for Mai, but still wants to make Mai see for herself that the feelings she felt might really be for his brother. Maybe I’m being a little dramatic here, but it’s almost like telling the one you love that they are not really in love with you, but with your best friend. It’s like a soap opera in my head!
Scratch, I do not intend to destroy Ghost Hunt in anyway, so no soap :X

ah I really hope the author would pick up where she left off and feed us hungry leeches some more of the NaruxMaixGene sweet/bitter-ness :)

I say Mai’s in love with both of them! But since one of them’s dead, she can only choose the other one! (but have secret dates with the smiley one in her dreams. bwhahahah)

    *bang head against the wall*

    *repeatedly*

    ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    *takes deep breath*

I so confused about what I’m feeling right now. I’m going to defer commenting until I’ve organized my thoughts.

*looks sadly at my “Dream Naru = Real Naru” banner.*

Thanks, LKK, for the spoilers, even thought I seemed to have guessed everything wrong for all the right reasons.

  13. [...] There is a very interesting post on THAT Animeblog about some (or all?) missing information about th… The information are collected from the novels this series is based on. I can’t say anything about the content, because I haven’t read it yet since I don’t want to spoil a possible OVA or second season for me. However, my determination gets weaker each hour. as i was reading this a question poped into my head. if this is like a soap apra could gene be in a coma. that would explane alot of things. like why he didnt pass over yet. why his conection with his brother is messed up. why his body wasnt found. why the details of his death is unclear. mybe mia is his sole mate and thats why they can connect with one another. hummm. the one thing that i liked about the series is that it gave mia a family. so it cant end like that they have to end up together. it only seems fair. when he said he was tired and needed to rest it seemed strang. do ghost get tired. and it would also explane why maskao didnt sence that he was dead… could green also be for cuncussion?? brain dead? sorry cant spell well so bear with me….. humm somthing to think about….

  22. ChrmdThree April 15th, 2007 5:02 am

  26. .son. April 17th, 2007 12:37 am

cool! I knew about dream Naru beforehand but I didn’t know how he died.I also knew Dr Davis was Naru but I never really figured out what all his powers were, other than the ability to control objects. Thanks for the information! (:

However, I feel that Mai loves Naru, not Gene. She was probably confused after finding out the person in her dreams was Gene, not Naru. However, I think she will sort out her feelings and realise that she loves Naru.

Besides, I’m a MaiXNaru fan! They make such a great pair. GeneXMai is alright but I really think she loves Naru more (:
I hope they end up together.
    haha!

  27. summerrain April 17th, 2007 3:46 am

Thank you so much for the spoilers! Was really disappointed after the anime ended. I am glad that i finally have some answers now. Hope that Mai and Naru will end up together!!! =)

  28. bounce house April 26th, 2007 10:24 pm

Personally, I totally agree with you.

  29. ~RaVeN~ April 27th, 2007 10:51 pm

THANKS a bunch.. has been wantin to have a spoiler to explain everything!! hontoni arigatou.. yupz,, agreed!! let’s hope naru n mai ends up together!! hehe…

  30. Amanda April 30th, 2007 8:10 am

I agree with D.J, ChrmdThree, yupsydoo, .son., summerrain and ~RaVeN~ big time, Naru and Mai absolutely HAVE to be together in the end, they’re perfect together! I like Gene, but I mean, no offence to him, but he’s dead. That’s not the point though, Naru and Mai had so many moments together and so many people I know and have seen on the internet are Naru X Mai fans. I hope that in the end she’ll realise she loves Naru. That’s how I wanted it from the start and believe that’s how it has to be. I was rather disappointed when I read “Does Mai really ever get over her love for Gene?” cause I can’t help but think she just might not be with Naru… but I have a friend who reads TONS of manga and always knows who’ll end up with who, and she was absolutely positive that Mai would be with Naru. XD BWAHAHAHA!! There’s still hope!! She was like, also a Naru X Mai fan. Frankly, I’d be surprised if in the end, Naru and Mai wouldn’t be together. Well, I hope they definetely will be!!

  32. Sakiza May 3rd, 2007 11:26 pm

OMG.I read about the Naru/Eugene thing once in a forum…Can’t believe it’s true. That’s sad that Mai got rejected by Naru, hope there will be a continuation of MaiNaru in anime and manga.I’m almost dead from concussion or hyperventilation after reading this.Ghost Hunt just HAS to continue. T_T … Thanks for the summary…I now cross my fingers for the author to write again. ^_^
    Arigato!

  33. Hannah May 10th, 2007 5:11 am

I love Naru . but the bit in this blog where it says she never tried to see the real Naru… what does that mean. does that mean he doesn’t smile because hes depressed and unhappy with his life and would prefere to be dead instead of his brother? Does he where black and keeps to himself when it appears before he was more of an outgoing loud mouth(why do i think that?). i think he is still traumatised from exspiriencing genes death. it really anoys me that he wears black, he looks so much better in grey and blue. If he really is depressed then i think mai can save him . she is in love with a dead man. but hes dead so now she must concentrate on doing a favour to manshe loves by saves the man(gene)s twin. i think that naru may harbour slight feelings for mai so he may listen to her. i think could prize out of him what has been supressing him all this time and she can make him smile again. she can help eliviat the burden of being a child genius. i think that if she directed her love at him like none else has he could open up and become a happyier person. with her love he can smile again , where blue and grey and grow to love her through her sweet and caring nature. evidence for this is that he teases her - boys who can’t exspress their feelings might do this. also he manages to be proveked by her in episode 25 - this implys he really listens and cares about what she has to say and also that he takes it into acount.

Just to make a sperate point, why use all his PK power in the final episode onlly to pass out again. surely he knew he would look like more of a fool if he keeps passing out from doing crazy thing than if he just acts cool, ignors her, and goes on his way. Any way , he could just fire her , then hed never have to take her crap again, but he doesn’t coz i think he likes her. aaaaaaaaaaaah . *sob* *sob* i love naru so much *sob* i feel really sorry for him and how hes so depressed about his life. *sob* some one please save him….

  34. Twets May 10th, 2007 6:33 am

wow.. O.O I thought Naru and Mai will end up together O.O AAAAAAAA!! xD Now Ghost Hunt is my favourite anime ^^ I want second season!!! xD Would be reeeeeeaaaaally cool ^^

  35. bellie May 12th, 2007 12:54 pm

Thanx for the summarry :P finally some things are made clear.

Also I think the reason Gene can’t pass on is because of his connection to his twin brother. They do come from the same cells (identical twins), so it would be logical that they also have to be together (both dead) to pass on (or something like that).

Anyway love the anime and I hope the mangaka is making new volumes (if so, that they come out very soon –> can’t wait).

  36. Billy (As if) May 15th, 2007 9:22 am

    Nuuuuuuuuuu!!! NARUXMAI FOR EVER MORE!!!

  37. Alcatraz May 15th, 2007 9:41 am

O.m.f.g… but I think it would be unlikely that Naru and Mai aren’t together in the end. I went a little crazy and thought of how the author thought about it (I was determined to find the answer to said mystery -.-). “I’m going to make a story called Ghost Hunt, where a girl called Mai spends SO much time with her boss (Naru), whom she thinks she falls in love with, but in the end she falls in love with Narus dead (hello, no offence or anything, but he’s dead…sorry, I couldn’t resist^^) twin brother” OR “I’m going to make a story called Ghost Hunt, where a girl called Mai spends SO much time with her boss (Naru), whom she falls in love with, but then she thinks she falls in love with Narus dead twin brother. Naru leaves to England and then comes back later and Mai realises she loves Naru, not his brother (and for goodness sake, finally!!)” May it’s just be me, but I think the second one is somewhat more logical than the first one… or I might just be going crazy of the thought of Naru and Mai not being together…the horror…the horror…ok, lets ignore that…shall we? Anyways, I found out that approximately 97% of people are for Naru and Mai, hehehe!!

  38. Phibby May 16th, 2007 2:58 pm

Well, thank you for the spoilery post! ^_^ You were a great help, so really thank you.

    But on a side note: I don’t get it why most of the NaruxMai Shippers make such a fuss over the ending. I mean, from time to time a little non-happy end doesn’t hurt and besides that it gives lots and LOTS freedom for fanworks. I really don’t get it. o_O;

  39. Tessa :) May 17th, 2007 8:43 am

Yeah thx 4 that! I’m happy that I know what happend now after the anime. I still wish there will be a second season though!

  40. Lock.VII May 17th, 2007 11:05 pm

    wow…
thanks so much for the post! I would’ve never known any of this if it weren’t for this post! Thanks so much!
    =)
Naru has such a huge background story~
    It’s amazing~
I never even expected him to have a twin brother and that his brother was visiting Mai in her dreams. Wow~ The author is truly one amazing person~

The ending of the Evil Spirits novel series seems pretty concluding, but there is still one unanswered question, Who killed Gene? Who wrapped him n tossed him into the lake? I have a feeling it wasn’t just an accident…

I wonder if Mai likes Gene or Noll? I mean, she did start falling for Naru cuz of her dreams of Gene…
but i think Naru might’ve started to like Mai a little (more than a friend), why else would he give her a picture of himself and Gene? I mean, there not really romantically invovled, but it would at least mean that he didn’t want her to forget about him, which means he probably does have some feelings towards her. And then of course, Naru smiles and asks her if she loves him or his brother, which doesn’t have to mean anything, but at least he didn’t openly reject her.
By the way, i’m not a MaixNaru fan, i just like pairing the characters up~
    =P
    hehe
Bou-san is the best, in my opinion, i mean, he’s a monk but he’s a rock star!
    lol

ahhh, i can’t thank you enough for writing this entry~!!
I’m so glad you wrote it! I’m so glad i read it!
ahhh~ now i want to read the novels…
too bad i don’t know how to read Japanese…
    *sigh*
    =(

  41. blacksheep2193 May 19th, 2007 8:19 am

WOOOWW…. i love this! i also had lots of unanswered questions and was hoping for an OVA on the anime series, but this really helps sooo much!! thanx!! (-_-)

  42. tang May 20th, 2007 5:12 pm

hi, can anyone tell tell mi where i can buy the manga in s’pore.
    Thanks.

  43. CloneAge May 28th, 2007 8:25 am

I had a feeling that the dreams Mai had with the Naru pressence wasn’t the real Naru but a spirit, probably somebody close or perhaps a twin brother of Naru (didn’t thought of a Twin untill after the last anime)

  44. Fei June 5th, 2007 11:05 am

so this is all based on the novel of Ghost Hunt? does anyone know if Ghost Hunt is stopped at vol. 10? is it going to be like the novel?

  45. Fei June 5th, 2007 1:59 pm

by the way, the anime isnt stop at vol.6 of manga right? b/c the last case wasnt in vol.6

  47. angeluv June 18th, 2007 8:22 am

OMG!!Thx so much for this article!!I finally understood what had really happened…and for some reasons, this article had made me more interested in GH.
I was kinda disappointed to find out that the naru in mai’s dream is Gene and not Naru, but now it spice up the whole story, didn’t it? Everyone’s like discussing if it’ll be NaruXMai or GeneXMai…but I see that most pple want’s NaruXMai, as for me, I’m ok with both >>I like the smiling Naru more though.

  48. Keith June 18th, 2007 11:52 am

Thanks for the spoilers, while you they talked alot about and his reasons for coming to Japan and his family history there is one thing that your spoilers dont reveal and that everyone else here forgets about. That is who are Mai’s parents? Where any of them psychics? How did they die? Could Mai’s mother be the one who killed Naru’s brother Gene? What is Mai’s family history? Could she have been adopted like Naru and Gene were? Could Mai have family members who she does know about? Or even more outrageous could she related to Naru? These are some questions that I would wish to be answered but I doubt the last one is even possible it was just a thought though.

  49. Keith June 18th, 2007 11:58 am

sorry bout some of the missing words I forgot to check it over before posting

  50. bernadett June 19th, 2007 8:53 am

So there wud be a season 2??
Well who was gene?? and that Naru was in england??
cant wait for spoilers to tell…

  51. lizzie June 19th, 2007 11:09 am

It was around fall when I started tto watch the anime sries called “Ghost Hunt”. I never really had any interest in ghost since i do believe that to se is to believe. However, I was particularly fond of the series. When the season ended I wanted to no more, and I found this site. I am grateful that I was able to find this site since I do have alot of questions, which half of it was answered thanks to this site.

Basically, what im trying to say is that this is a very well made novel in the genre MYSTERY. I hope that it would have a second season and i hope that Naru would be romantically involve with someone but not masako. Mai would b able to straighten up her feelings, and what was gene trying to tell mai before naru interupted…

I was able to learn alot of it.. now im interested in buying the novel..no matter what it takes…

  52. lizzie June 19th, 2007 11:14 am

i love naru so much..because he’s just like a child when he acts proud and all. I also think that Naru liker her.. coz if he didn’t he wouldnt have ask mai to be a psrt timer at his place. I wish that Gene was alive too..and I do thik Gene likes mai to..and I also like naru and mai to end up together.but it doesnt seem like mai is naru’s type..but what the heck, it doesnt matter..

i just hope mai and naru ends up together…that’s it…

  53. booboo June 20th, 2007 1:27 am

dawg dis waz a g ass anime do u think that if gene waz stilla live it would b a luv trangle between the 3 of them n also i give proops 2 the author 4 makin this series cuz dat means u have a good imagination 4 things n also i think naruxmai cuz in the episode wit the crazy ass teacher n how she tried 2 curse evry 1 2 death 4 no apparent reason i might add wen they fell in2 the sewwer thin mai had these differ mood swings n ask if she regained composer n ahe said yea n how did he know n he juz gave a sexy n mysterious smile i mean damn u know he like cuz no way if he did not like her he would no that

  54. kawaii deidei chan June 21st, 2007 11:31 pm

Omg THANK YOU!!! My friend gave me the link to your site and I am very glad that an explanation to most of the unanswered questions have been done. I felt rather sad about how Mai had fallen in love with Gene, who is unfortuantely dead though I somewhat do sense that she harbors some romantic feelings towards Naru as well but may have not realized it yet. Naru does show some although rather vague, signs of romantic interest in Mai throughout the series. I’m crossing my fingers for Naru X Mai to become canon. But I wouldn’t mind Naru X Mai X Gene as it is cute.

  55. angel June 23rd, 2007 3:32 am

In my opinion Naru sees Mai as one of his friends. And Mai did not fell in love with Naru in the first place, she fell in love with the smiling Naru in her dreams. And I think Naru gave Mai that picture to let her see what Gene really looks like. But Gene’s is dead and Mai is always spending almost all her time together with Naru and she is the only one who could at least make him relaxe and I doubt that Mai is not also in love with Naru. She need to sort her feelings and continue the ANIME!

  56. Alice June 24th, 2007 9:36 am

Bravo! this is exactly the kind of info i’ve been searching for! i understand know, thankyou :)

  57. snuffpot June 25th, 2007 10:30 am

Thanks SOO much for posting this; it makes me love the series even more. I thought they left a lot out of the anime, since it seems kind of… lacking… I really wish they left more of those references in and at least did that next case… The way they finished with the anime was still good, in a way. It does leave you at least a bit satisfied; after all, we got to know Naru a little more, with a bit of a peak at what will probably never be in the anime.

The open ending in the novels (not counting White Heart, which was probably forced on the author, and didn’t reveal much) is somehow fitting. Naru’s questioning the direction of Mai’s feelings really makes her question her feelings. Its a little unfair to both of them if she only liked their good points meshed together, so it’s good that Naru rebutted her like that. But I still think Naru’s really been affected by Mai, and even if they’re friends they would stay good friends.

I laughed my head off when reading that Gene called his brother an ‘idiot scientist’, because Naru saying that about himself would be so OOC.

Well, thanks for telling us about what really happened… And I still think that the open ending suited a deep storyline like this.

  58. Taylor June 26th, 2007 3:38 pm

man i spolid myself and now i’m gonna cry from the ending thanx anyway

  60. dheu July 4th, 2007 11:40 am

Wow. Fantastic! I picked up the manga long before the anime began, and I always had the feeling that there was something much deeper going on below the surface… but I didn’t expect quite so much. Thank you for writing up such a detailed description of the backstory for Ghost Hunt! All I can say now is…. I really, really want to read the books now. Here’s hoping they are picked up for translation and published over here like her Twelve Kingdoms novels are!! I’m not holding my breath for it… but I am praying like there’s no tomorrow.

  61. Dani^^ July 7th, 2007 3:14 pm

wow that was excellent! ^^ I really hope Fuyumi Ono continues the novel

  64. Sam July 20th, 2007 2:20 am

O.M.G!!!! Thanks 4 the spoiler page.I have nt seen the anime cause my country does nt have it yet.I nearly cried when I read the part about Gene getting killed. If someone makes another spoiler page that would be great! I ve only read up 2 book 7 and i m about 2 read book 8 so i m like way behind the times but i get what these pages mean. I m hoping for more spoiler pages. i just want 2 say i m not a great fan of Ghosts but Ghost Hunt brought mu ghostly-side back.i m angry that there are nt that many ghost hunt books but we have to bring into perspective that books do take a while 2 make but i also agree that the author of the ghost hunt series needs 2 answer some questions. but there may be the fact that she is just sick of the series and is taking a break.by the way, gene gets my vote 4 the hottest dude in the series.

  65. goddessluna July 24th, 2007 7:41 pm

omg thank u so much for the spoliers i really loved it, now i just hope i get to read and see a secon series and book for ghost hunt… though i was kinda dissappionted that dream naru was his twin bro and not naru.. i just hope they end up together and i get to see a second ghost hunt. plz, plz,plz i just can’t wait
    again arigatou

  66. happysmiles01 August 4th, 2007 9:35 pm

Thank you i really like this anime…i was thinking when mai was telling naru in ep.20 that he did know how it feels to be killed and she wasn’t going to let masako go through that the she saw naru’s eyes and thought she might of said something wrong could he have been thinking about his brother’s death….anyways anyone know were i could find the actuall novel can you pleas pleas tell me =D

  67. Lija-chan August 11th, 2007 12:54 am

    Hah! I hate spoilers!! BUT!
I love this spoiler you made! XD I just can’t take it that a lot of stuff weren’t clearly answered in the anime. D:

I suggest us fans should spread the GHOST HUNT LOVE everywhere! =O Yea..I’m gonna draw and draw many GH fanarts and show it in deviantart..XD and tell people that they should watch it coz it’s an awesome anime!

And once Ghost Hunt gets a gazillion(which I doubt would ever happen..XD) there might be a BIG POSSIBILITY that the ones who made the anime make a second season for us fans!! D:

The author should really continue the novels..maybe that’s what the staff’s only waiting for. The right time for her to continue so they would know how to start the second season. ~_~

Anyways..thanks for the spoilers! ^_^ It was great reading all that!

    NaruMai! XD FOREVA! Poor Mai..D:
Dun worry Mai, hopefully..Naru likes you too. ^,~ he did save you once right? Hehe..(the first time the both of them were alone..w00t!) I love that epi..XD

  68. Lin August 22nd, 2007 11:22 am

    Thanks for the spoilers!

Personally, I don’t think it would make sense if Mai ended up with Gene… Naru is the one who couldn’t smile, but Mai managed to get him to smile after all (Sorry, I couldn’t phrase it better :o ). In just about every single anime/drama I’ve watched and manga I’ve read the girl ALWAYS ends up with the person who can’t smile or is really angry all the time (But later becomes happy because of her) like Hana-kimi! Just wouldn’t make sense if Naru isn’t with the girl who can make him smile…

You guessed it. I’m a definite NaruXMai!!!

  69. imme September 4th, 2007 5:47 pm

Thanx a bunch for posting this. Actually I read this when I finished the Ghost Hunt series last summer and was desperate to find some answeres for all the ????? of the anime. Sometimes I want to read the novel…but it is quite impossible and thanx to u i got the later story.

Ok now about the spoiler…not only Mai, I am confused too whom I like Naru or Gene (hehehe…will never get answere to that, i am sure). I really want to watch Naru wearing something other than black. More importantly I want to watch Naru and Gene in their own self. Hopefully, they will make a second season…even though I am convinced they are not going to.

    Ghost Hunt fan

  70. Lisa September 4th, 2007 6:21 pm

OMFG!!!!! all of this happened in volumes 7-10? whats the white hearts collection thing? i don’t get it. i think that mai is in love with “naru” aka gene and maybe she does harbor feelings for naru. somewhere in the blog i read that gene was going to tell mai something when they were in a forest or something. i think he was either going to tell her his feelings for her or tell her that he isn’t naru. i hope the producers makes a couple more seasons for the anime. naru does seem to care for mai a lot more than masako i.e. calling her by her first name which usually means intimate relationship, in the bending spoons arc mai is about to fall into a manhole and naru catches her hand but falls in as well, in the forbidden game arc he rescues her when she’s in the nurse’s office by falling on top of her to prevent her from being crushed by the falling ceiling. anyways i think naru and mai should get together while ignoring the gene thing.

  71. melody September 4th, 2007 7:55 pm

It think naru really likes mai …like in the ending he asks her to serve tea for him (or whatever) and when they fell in the sewer he tried to cheer her up…I think that mai isint really in love with gene she’s just confusing her feelings because he smiles at her which naru doesnt…I dont know but they better finish the manga and then they should start a second season hehe

  72. Krys September 28th, 2007 12:10 am

Ok did the author mean something when Naru said ’she might have 200 hundred years to live’. There is something odd about that statement. I honetly think he has feelings for Mai, it’s just that Naru is so coded all the time

  73. Emi October 14th, 2007 7:08 pm

Wow! This really shed light on a lot of things I originally didn’t understand…but I disagreed with Naru’s reason to reject Mai’s affection towards him–throughout the series she makes a lot of assumptions about Naru’s character, but is slowly made aware of his true nature. Although she did think dream!Naru was the real Naru, it was only added to her admiration of the small acts of kindness he shows. In fact, she knows his character very well by the end of the first series. So it wasn’t completely true that she wasn’t seeing the real Naru. I really hope the rumor of a continuation of the series isn’t completely unfounded. The end of the first series only brought more questions–it would be nice to have more closure than that. It reminds me much of how the Fruits Basket series left off–although, in the case with F.B., even more aspects were poorly explained to begin with, as opposed to with the manga.

Just thought I’d mention for any Western fans.

You can rejoice, Funimation just licensed Ghost Hunt and will release it Fall 2008.

And may I just say to that SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I don’t think I’ve been this excited over an acquisition, since Ouran High School Host Club ^-^

Its going to be a long wait, but sooooooo worth it when those dvd’s finally hit.

Thanks Impz for the additional informations provided by LKK. I was hooked to Ghost Hunt after the first episode and reading the summary that your blog about although I have not finished watching the whole series yet after I downloaded them from realitylapse.com.
Thanks again Impz for the other summary that you have made in regards to the Ghost Hunt anime series, you are sure a very dedicated anime blogger.
Btw the manga for the Ghost Hunt Volume 10 release was delayed from May 2008 to April 2009 and another volume 11 is coming out only in Oct 2009. Looks like we will have to wait like omg another 1.5 years before looking at another manga which makes me sceptical of “will there ever be another season 2 in the near future?” or “will the ending be concluded by an OVA?” although the author of the original Ghost Hunt novels did say that she is re-working on an old girl ghost story she have written a long time ago.
Maybe she is also encouraged by the unprecedented interest shown in Ghost Hunt as the novels was released more than 10 years ago but the interest wasn’t so great as now after the release of the anime. I guess it got to do with Naru who although so stony cold all the time but is so kawaii and Mai who also have the spontaneous personality which is opposite Naru at the same time in the anime.
Actually I like it the anime uses the latest technology such as laptop and I find it that Naru explanations at time is quite similar to Fox Mulder in X-Files minus a sceptics called Dana Scully.
I agree with D.J saying that Gene and Mai is actually re-enacting the scene from the past. So Gene hugging Mai is actually re-enacting the scene where the princess lover murdered the rich man who was also trying to woo the princess in the arc. Remember the rich man purportedly intercepted the secret mailing between the princess and her lover and knew about their secret plan of meeting at a spot to elope?
I agree with snuffpot though of Naru questioning of Mai directions of her feeling as it would only be fair to both of them if Mai really sort out her feeling either for Gene or Naru.
But from the beginning Mai have been thinking it was Naru that she always talk to in the dream and held strong to her convictions until Naru informed her it was Gene who comes to her in her dream does make a point that Mai actually have feelings for Naru.
If Gene did not died and it would be like Naru X Masako and Mai X Gene. But since Gene died so it become more complicated. Actually there’s support for Mai X Bou’san and Mai X John.
I will still be the biggest supporter for Mai x Naru!!

I have one question? Can you buy the ‘evil spirits’ collection in the English version?

  78. monika December 6th, 2007 12:40 pm

Thank you very much for this spoiler . I am grateful that i can have more information about my sweet naru XDXD. I think that mai truly love only naru not gene. She spend much more time with Naru she contacted with gene only in her dreams. She knows much more about naru and she knows him better than gene.Of course i would be confused too if would find that the one who i was dreaming about was not naru but some unknown person !! It is only normal and i understand her. the biggest thing how can she have any relationships with ghost!!! It is impossible. Naru maybe doesent smile often but he is alive, warm and she always can hug him. she doesnt need to go to sleep to talk with him. How long can she sleep without break?? it is unrealistic for me . Dont forget that naru can smile!!! and she showed it in episode 17. he was so beautifull then. if only mai try harder and harder and and prove that she want to be with naru and she truly love him i think everything will be fine . I almost cried when i read everything what you wrote. i hope there will be another season soon. sorry for my spell but i am foreigner and i have problems with gramatic. Maybe i will come here later bye see yaa

  81. Michelle January 3rd, 2008 1:23 am

Hi everyone. I found this blog about 2 days ago and many of you have claimed that the manga picks up the anime from VOL. 6+ So I went and read volumes 3-7 and it just mainly covers the same arc in the anime. I see no significant difference. I am downloading this off of mangatraders.com which has been my reliable manga source for some time now. So I don’t how the manga could continue from vol. 6+ if you get what i mean.. So I will have to continue on to read 8 & 9. From the looks of it the bloody arc has not finished and then theres the cursed home. I don’t think the manga continues anything from the anime except for some minor details or an extra at the end.

“The next investigation follows almost immediately after the last one in the anime. After Naru is released from the hospital, the gang begins their journey home. In transit, they pass by a site that resembles the lake area Naru saw in his psychometric vision of Gene’s death. Naru stops the journey home and hires divers to search the lake.”

Im guessing this next investigation holds within vol. 9 or so?

  82. Michelle January 3rd, 2008 1:25 am

Annnnndddd I read that there IS a love triangle.

    Not between masakoxnaruxmai

but it’s gene, naru, and mai. =D

Because gene said he’d wait for mai a hundred years from now in the afterlife. How sweeeet =)

  83. Michelle January 3rd, 2008 1:29 am

OMG. It’s late and i totally misred the blog. It was actually in the NOVEL. GRR, oh well. Too bad so sad =( Yeah theres no pick up after the anime you guys. The anime and manga is EXACTLY alike. =(

  84. Cathy Nguyen February 11th, 2008 4:48 pm

wow….that is amazing…and overwhelming…i’m thankful you found the time to type this all up for the benefit of other’s confusion on the american series…

though it is sad, that naru and mai don’t end up together…:( i wish they would make a second series anime with gene in it…

  85. sarah March 7th, 2008 1:32 am

pls. send some for me because i love mystery i you send some for me and love this show

  86. Ann March 11th, 2008 2:11 am

Thanks for the spoilers. I just saw them today.. Ghost hunt is an amazing series and I have just read upto the 6th manga and its nice to know what happens after that. Hope they continue for another season for this series.

Its so sad about mai, with naru bluntly refusing her. Still there is a chance that he likes her (that would be soo nice). I had read somewhere that Naru was Oliver and had a brother (Gene) … still did not expect the story to get so complicated..

and What does Naru mean by saying Mai has 200 years to live???

  87. Kichiku March 20th, 2008 5:40 am

I think Mai loves Naru though she must have been taken aback when she discovered it wasn’t actually Naru, but his brother who is in her dreams.

Mai must have hoped deep down that Naru really would smile like that, but it must have been a little disheartening to hear that it wasn’t him.

If it was me, I’d fall for the real-life guy.
Sure Gene is the kinder of the two, but Mai spends more time around Naru.

Though we can’t really say how Mai’s mind works. So it’s hard to say whether she loves Naru or Gene.
But I’d be happier if she chose Naru. :) He IS the one who’s alive after all.

  88. Machi March 22nd, 2008 5:25 am

I’d say novel 7 really does seem like a good conclusion shame they didn’t chose to animate it >.

  89. takada-san March 24th, 2008 7:35 am

wow, you spoiled me. XD and i’m not complaining. :D

i was just really surprised with the fact that dream!Naru was actually Gene. I know they are identical but i like Naru better. XD mai x naru forever!!

i also think that it is naru that mai loves. he’s alive, she can feel him, he was the one making her blush in the real life. and even if naru doesn’t smile a lot, when he does, it can melt. X”D

i haven’t finished the manga but i sure want to have the novels BADLY. XD and i really mean WANT.

i’m watching ghost hunt episode 16 again right now. XD

  90. SilentDreamer March 26th, 2008 1:55 pm

Hey, thanks for the spoilers =)
It made me want to read the novels badly, but I have no idea if they can be found in english, nor if they can be read online or something. Cuz well, all these infos are very nice to know but it can’t compare to the real thing =p

  91. Keri March 31st, 2008 5:11 am

hello. I am sorry to sound stupid but I’ve only watched the anime of this awesome…awesome series. which volume does it reveal that Naru (the hottest person eva!) hsa a twin etc etc…all the stuff that isn’t in the anime. I would really like to read from where the anime left of if there is one. the english manga can be downloaded or read online. it’s awesome. I like the art in the anime better though….thanks very much!!! arigatoo onegaishimasu.

  92. Caryl April 6th, 2008 5:58 am

This blog gave me a lot of imformation. I just love it!!!!
Ever since, I also think that Mai loves Gene and not Naru. She only came to like Naru when she saw Gene in her dreams which she thought Naru. I also think that Naru likes Mai. Somehow, he’s showing jelousy towards Gene.

  93. Silmeria_27 April 11th, 2008 4:20 am

wow!!!!!!!!Im a little surprised with the spoilers!!!!!after i read your spoilers,,I’m one of the people who thinks that naru loves mai,,so much than masako because why would he risk his life everytime mai gets in danger? And she calls mai in her name while masako in her last name,,I’ll also agree that mai is just confused with her feelings just like what they have said on those who commented here said…because in the earlier episodes,,she is really inlove with naru,,and to think that the guy in her dreams is naru(at first,, but as revealed in the spoilers she will know the truth that he’s gene) it’s one of the strong proof that she really loves naru not gene..im not maixnaru fan but now i’m becoming one,,actually i did’nt expect myself to love this anime. My brother and i just tried to watched it on crunchyroll because it’s horror and coz we want a new anime to watch because we both like something about horror so much,,then when i watched the anime,,im beggining to be hooked at it,,i mean i really liked it nah..it’s one of my most favorite anime,,the other one is kamichama karin..thank you for posting this spoiler. actually i went here because someone post your site on you tube..(im giving him/her my thanks to that,,his name was miakho)im recently finding amv for ghost hunt and i saw your site,,,it’s really thanks to you..now some puzzles in my mind are connected..now i have to wait for the second season to release… for the ones who created this anime,,(J.C. staff) and to the author of the novel,,you did a good job of creating a nice anime,,i hope that someday i can also do that through my novels..and i beg you to release it’s second season because i can’t wait..to see it….

    Thank you!!:-)

  94. Ghost hunt fan May 15th, 2008 1:31 am

I love ghost hunt. You can download them off anime eden for both the anime and manga for free, I think.
Of course it is obvious that Naru and Mai will sort their differences out and end up together. But what makes it interesting is that Naru is not the type to take Mai on a date or something. I think he wears black because they are his brothers clothes in case he experiences a Psychometric vision again. Later its probably because he is remembering his brother, likes black or just cuz the author couldn’t draw him in non-black clothes.

Masako might fall for John or Osamu [Yasuhara] I hope she is ok because I feel kinda sorry for her though its partly her fault Naru dislikes her. Of course he will if she blackmails him into taking cases or going on dates with her. STUPID IDIOT!
I’m a real fan of this, though Urado still scares the crap outta me, I’m learning Japanese so maybe one day I’ll get the books and read em.
I know, we should all sign a petition and give it to the author and anime makers for more Ghost hunt!! it might work, nobodies tried it yet I think.

  95. Ghost hunt fan May 19th, 2008 4:41 am

    Hey its me again.
I’m gonna try and get the novels whether the are in Japanese or not. Then is a few years when I can understand japanese accuratly I might type it up online if there are still fans out there.
If not I’ll make fan manga of this based on this post. Mix up my own ideas with it and try and have the characters acting in character.

I’m havng a tough time not pinching Naru for my story. Of course with some changes. anyone else have this problem?

  96. Ghost hunt fan May 20th, 2008 1:35 am

Right! I’m making a fan thingy of this based on the info here.
Any questions you want answered? tell me and I will figure out a reason and post my website adress here when I’m done.

  97. Ghost hunt fan May 20th, 2008 1:45 am

I apologize for posting so frequently, this is the last time.
Naru says he cannot spirit travel right? then how did he meet her just as Gene was about to tell her something? Maybe he’s lying? or can spirit travel only under certain conditions?
    Please tell me about that.

  99. Ghost hunt fan June 2nd, 2008 2:04 am

apparently volume 10 has been released and I”m waiting for it to come out in english. Theres going to be a volume 11 as well. I think they just finish were the novels stopped.

  100. Kanela June 10th, 2008 7:40 pm

Thank you, thank you so much for the spoiler. I’ve read the manga (vol09) and watched the anime, and I was really looking forward to finding Fuyumi Ono-sama’s novel on the internet. But now with this, I can tell you I’m pretty much satisfied.
Can’t believe Gene is dead(although I had previously found a lil bit of info regarding that)…can’t believe Mai and Naru don’t have a proper ending (I’m a follower, yay!)…it is just so…aww, this made me cry…really.
    I want more.
Particulary, I want Naru to realize he does indeed like Mai. I want him to be happy, and Mai too. I mean, ok, she saw Gene in her dreams, thought about him being Naru…and fell in love with him. In love with Naru!! Fantasizing about him being kind and smiling, that’s what every girl in love dreams about their loved ones, specially if it’s an emotional constipated dude like Naru.(dunno if I made myself clear…D:) And she actually made HIM smile, didn’t she?
Oh well. I hope Ono-sama is really working in Ghost Hunt.
Meanwhile…there’s still fanfiction, isn’t it? *sigh*

  101. Trinh June 12th, 2008 9:35 am

  103. Zoeyvision June 27th, 2008 4:37 pm

Wow…I just found Ghost Hunt and started watching it… And I can’t believe I was right on so much of it!!!
    1) I knew that when Monk-san and John were talking about Oliver that Naru must be him in real life. I mean, why else would they show Naru being all ‘I don’t care’ while they were talking about it. The info we were given just seemed too random to be nothing, is all…

    2) I KNEW Masako had something over Naru’s head. And I figured it was that she knew who he really was. I mean, Naru never acts like he liked her in the slightist, and yet, he gives in to her on things. She should know that this will only make Naru hate her.

    3) I knew that Dream!Naru wasn’t really Naru. I had a feeling that Naru had a twin and that it was really him instead of Naru. I mean…this is a show about the supernatural and psychic powers….and don’t they say that twins are thought to have telepathic powers with each other?? And since it was very obvious that Dream!Naru was totally different from Naru, I just figuered Naru had a twin somewhere that was talking to Mia, though I wasn’t sure Gene was dead…but I thought he might be…

Now on some of the other points…

I believe Mai is in love with Naru, not Gene, but she’s not sure who she really loves. Why do i feel this way??? When she first starts seeing Dream!Naru and he seems different…like he smiles at her, while she likes this, she feels it’s odd and is some what uneasy with the way he acts in her dreams. And, she never seems that nervous around Dream!Naru, while she’s always blushing around the real Naru.
I also think Naru likes Mai. He’s always bullying her. I think it’s way of showing he cares…lol. Also, she’s the only girl he ever calls by her given(first) name…Mai. He won’t use -san with her. And even though Masako has told him he can use her name he only calls her by her family name….with -san…..lol. The only other people he calls byname are Lin, whom he’s known since childhood, and John ( and I’m sure this is only because John is Australian and they don’t use honorifics, so he’s being polite to John by calling him as he would be called at home….kind of like when Japanese come to America, we would still use an honorific with thier name if were being polite.).
Also, Naru always seems to be there for Mai when she’s in trouble, and while Monk-san has taken on the role of ‘Big Bro’ to Mai, Naru seems equally protective of her, often stepping in front of her when he feels she’s in danger or if he feels she’s frightened. And while he trys to pretend that he doesn’t care that she sometimes thinks ill of his actions ( like in the school case when she thought he was going to let the kids get hurt), I think it hurts him on some deep level when she doubts him. The look on his face at the end of that case when she goes to say “sorry” to him says it all.

Well…that’s all from me. I really hope they finish the manga for real, as well as the anime. That’d be nice…:)

  104. Zairuka July 8th, 2008 3:10 am

He tells her that she will see Gene again whether she wanted to or not. Mai asks if he mea
