I would have said the Zen V plus a few days ago...but...like so many others the screen suddenly went a very dark shade of red and is completely unreadable. This is after only 4 months of use. I wrote Creative and since it is out of the 3 month labor warranty they want me to send it back at my expense, pay a deposit of $25 for diagnostic and repair, and then pay any difference for the labor involved in the repair...and it will take several weeks for the whole process.
Considering this seems to be a very common problem I think it is absurd that they want me to pay for something that is obviously a systemic hardware problem on their end.

Other than that it is an awesome little player...but the "buts" are too big to overcome at this point...don't go with the Zen V Plus, at least until the bugs are resolved...

I have a Creative Zen V Plus 2GB, and while it was great for the 6 months I had it, the screen deteriorated badly 2 days ago. Everything is a dark shade of red and there's a black line across it. It's probably a dud though, and I find the player on the whole to be a very nice piece of hardware.

But on hindsight I should've bought the Sansa. For $10 more I could get a similarly spec'd player with a proper charger and removable battery. The Zen V charges via USB, and you'd have to buy a separate charger if you travel without a laptop. And if the battery deteriorates on the Sansa you can simply a new one.

cluk.

PSP?! Don't be silly - if you're buying it just to play media, it's a waste not only of a good device, you'll also be sorely disappointed. Without earphones, audio output is CRAP - volume is hardware enforced reduced.

Not to mention the PSP doesn't have any internal memory, which requires you to buy one of the more expensive media cards ever to make up for it (on average, a Mem Stick PD is like $20 more than an SD of the same capacity). Also, depending on your firmware, you can't just stuff AVIs into the stick and expect it to read.

If you aren't getting a PSP for hacking or gaming, don't bother - the Archos is a better unit for the same price.

Oh, and don't bother with the 'Pod unless you love using iTunes. IIRC the 'Pod doesn't "just work" when you throw music inside it in mass storage device mode (tho I hear one of the latest firmwares let you do this). If you're getting a dedicated MP3 player, it MUST work in Mass Storage mode for ease of use, NOT enforce the use of some proprietary encoding/transfer tool (which many, many companies seem to advocate).

Oh, btw: Creative's Zen Neeon comes with an FM Radio - with recording capability (Tho Creative once did disable recording in response to the Asian equivalent of the RIAA, and put it back after an end-user backlash). FM Radios in devices are always nice, when there's a day you forget to load up your unit with teh media. The only other thing on the list that comes with it is the Sansa - unless of course you live in Europe, where that is removed -.-

I pod nano (given that its the new clip on one) is the preferred choice for me, my friend has one and its so small and very easy to use. Light weight, enough memory, long lasting power, nice looking design what more could you ask for.

No comment on the mp3 player selection, just want to note that if you are running Windows, I'd avoid iPod because the PC version of iTunes is a really awful piece of software.

I own a nano personally and is running Vista, luckily there's a plugin you can buy to make it sync with media player 11. Besides that I am happy with nano, though the color screen is quite pointless since it doesn't play video.

extrange:
he's on a budget, and you also have to pay additional costs for memory sticks. as for pornability... orz.
i like the archos better due to its larger capacity (especially since you do not have to buy memory sticks) and the codecs it can play.

ok for those who are whining that i do not like iPod nano in an unfair bias:
yes the ipod nano is a good mp3 play and great considering the size, but it lacks features in my opinion. iPod's and iTunes do work quite well with each other. if you do use iTunes and do not expect to use any other features, iPod nano is a valid option. but if you do not use iTunes, the Samsung T9 is what i'd recommend.

oh sorry for the long post.
for a really good deal on budget, i do recommend either the iRiver clix or the Samsung T9. another alternative that i just remembered was the Cowon F2.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855228003
this player can use drag-and-drop to store non-music files. hey! no usb flash drive needed!

now i realize the links i posted to are for North American consumers, sorry i am not familiar with Singaporean. T_T

I consider myself to be a consumer electronics expert.
Funny thing is... my math professor asked mme to choose a mp3 player for her too. ha.
Here are my choices:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855150065
the iRiver clix. an player that can pplay low-quality video but also can play a few flash games. Great consumer ratings.
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4140389&JRSource=googlebase.datafeed.SAM+YPT9JQB
Samsung T9. Better than any nano, similar in size. extremely attractive DAP, also plays video. I currently own one and am largely satisfied with everything it offers.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855501011
Archos 404. Quite a bit more expensive, but hey! you can play anime! w00t! PMP are teh win!

as for the choices you presented, the Sansa has had many negative consumer reports and Sandisk is largely a memory card supplier more than a mp3 player centric company. also the screen is of poor quality and is not recommended to use with photo, much less video.

The Creative Zen V Plus. Mixed reviews. some people believe it wonderful, however a decent population have had extremely negative view, claiming the firmware crashes during play and the lcd screen started to deteriorate immediately after purchase.

The Creative Zen Neeon. I'm spoiled. No colored screen? WTF. Not the most attractive player out there. Even if it has alot of memory, believe me, looks are an important factor in purchasing mp3 players. Not many consumer reviews also.

iPod nano. the consumerist trap. yes it is a highly popular player and it does look attractive. HOWEVER, the audio quality is mediocre and it offers nothing but music play and a small screen for photo view. in every respect other than Apple fanboyism, the Samsung T9 beats this DAP in every respect.

The Creative Zen Neeon. I’m spoiled.
