With the IT fair show in Singapore coming at 8 March, Impz needs your help to decide what mp3 player he should buy. Due to the extremely tight budget that he has, he has done a little research and he has found a few mp3 players that is in his budget.
Which one do you recommend? Do you have any other players that is in the same price zone?

The Zen V-plus would be my choice, with the ipod nano coming in second.
Those two for sure though, definately. How much more does the 4GB nano cost though, I thought it was only a bit more?
Mr. Admin added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 8:41 pmI Have tried various MP3 players, but only the iPod Nano from the list.
I can say it is by far one of the best players I’ve used, for sheer simplicity, good interface, nano size and… well, it’s from Apple what did you expect?
Mr. Someone added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 8:50 pmI’d go for the iPod nano too if I were you.

ipod’s my choice 8D
i’m using the ipodvid now and i absolutely love it ![]()
I have an iPod Mini 4G with me, and I can vouch for it being the best mp3 player among the choices you listed.
Oh, and this should be a poll. ![]()
Zen V Plus, simple layout + joystick. Probably one of the few people who still can’t get the hang of the iPod scrollwheel (thus on a Sony).
Doesn’t the remastered iPod nano support videos? Always thought it did but didn’t mention it on the linked Apple site.
Jet added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 9:19 pmWhile soliciting advice from comments might not be the best plan, I currently have the Sansa e250. It hasn’t died on me yet, and I’ve had it for about half a year so far, so it’s reliable. It’s easy to transfer files onto it, and the interface is awesome. :3 I’d say go for that. ![]()
I saw a Sansa yesterday in action. It looked very cool. Apparently they’re quite reliable also. I’ve seen the others you’ve listed, but I liked the Sansa the best.
Dante added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 9:29 pmhahaha, thebign, it’s more like getting ideas from those who own the thing. I mean if you have it, you will have a favorable response if you like it. I just want to make sure whichever I chose, there is no problem with it ![]()
Save money and dun buy a mp3 player. Just sleep whenever you think you would use it ![]()
I got my nano last year as a white day present. Its still alive and kicking, easy to use and I love it.
I use the alarm on it all the time, you can play basic games on it. It has calender and mutiple clock functions. So I have it programmed to tell me what the time is in England as well as the States. I’m always bad in figuring in the time difference when I call home so now I can just check on the nano.
Do you charge up the other models mentioned by plugging them into a USB port? That’s the one thing I really love about my nano and my shuffle, I can charge them on the comp. The shuffle in particular is great since you can just plug it directly into a USB without a cable and they came out with a rejigged version of that recently.
Um so yea, the nano is sweet ^-^
D.J added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 10:18 pmThe nano would be good choice. Lots of accessories from third party makers, iTunes is a breeze to use, and better resale value if you wanna upgrade in future.
Depending on the bitrate of your tunes, the size matters. If your tunes are say, on 128kbps~192kbps, then 2gb should suffice.
iPod’s service center is in town while Creative is in Jurong (unless you stay in that area), else servicing is an inconvenience.
shiawasekun added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 11:01 pmWell I have no problem with the Sansa, and you shouldn’t either. I recommend it. ![]()
hmm, Nano would be good and simple to handle, but if you’re looking for good sound quality, leave it to Creative.
(Hey, i’ve tried both)..
Afuro Kamen added these pithy words on Feb 23 07 at 11:50 pmI’ll retract my first comment and go along with Alkanphel’s. His advice is probably the best choice. ![]()
Anything, but the iPod please. I’m tired of seeing everyone holding one of those.
aurabolt added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 1:02 amIt helps if you can actually find people who have it locally so you can try it. A lot of people go Ipod simply since it’s such a popular product that everyone knows about.
From trying both the nano (the new ones, heck, I got one for my g/f) and the zen V, I personally like the zen V better and I’m an Ipod user.
It’s really iffy, since they will all do fine. If you can, find actual ones to fiddle with and see what you like.
Mr. Admin added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 1:22 amIpod Nano. Its sleek and sexy. GO FOR IT.
elohir added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 4:41 amI got my Ipod 4GB (its green! XD)last month at Sim Lim before flying back down to Melbourne for uni. It’s great so far, I just love the clicking wheel… hopefully it won’t die on me too soon.
But seriously, the Ipod would be of more value as it’s more widely known everywhere. So even if you wanted to sell it after getting tired of your nano, people would still buy it at a price (of course so long as it is not broken)
ps: could I add you to my blogroll?
beanie added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 5:28 amno problem, ^_^;;;
Hmm, it seems that all the players that I mentioned are pretty decent. Does anyone have the neeson 6gb player? How is it?
Impz added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 6:12 amMmm… that is a tough one, I also own an ipod and the music reproduction is quite good. I also like the alarm but I must warn you it can deconfig sometimes.
Either way is easy to use and there are lots of compatible peripherals and programs with it.
Now if you are going to buy anything at all i would suggest getting the extended warranty especially for apple products. Not that they are bad but repair and tech support is expensive so I guess considering that would also be a must.
I consider myself to be a consumer electronics expert.
Funny thing is… my math professor asked mme to choose a mp3 player for her too. ha.
Here are my choices:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855150065
the iRiver clix. an player that can pplay low-quality video but also can play a few flash games. Great consumer ratings.
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4140389&JRSource=googlebase.datafeed.SAM+YPT9JQB
Samsung T9. Better than any nano, similar in size. extremely attractive DAP, also plays video. I currently own one and am largely satisfied with everything it offers.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855501011
Archos 404. Quite a bit more expensive, but hey! you can play anime! w00t! PMP are teh win!
as for the choices you presented, the Sansa has had many negative consumer reports and Sandisk is largely a memory card supplier more than a mp3 player centric company. also the screen is of poor quality and is not recommended to use with photo, much less video.
The Creative Zen V Plus. Mixed reviews. some people believe it wonderful, however a decent population have had extremely negative view, claiming the firmware crashes during play and the lcd screen started to deteriorate immediately after purchase.
The Creative Zen Neeon. I’m spoiled. No colored screen? WTF. Not the most attractive player out there. Even if it has alot of memory, believe me, looks are an important factor in purchasing mp3 players. Not many consumer reviews also.
iPod nano. the consumerist trap. yes it is a highly popular player and it does look attractive. HOWEVER, the audio quality is mediocre and it offers nothing but music play and a small screen for photo view. in every respect other than Apple fanboyism, the Samsung T9 beats this DAP in every respect.
korockid added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 1:29 pmoh sorry for the long post.
for a really good deal on budget, i do recommend either the iRiver clix or the Samsung T9. another alternative that i just remembered was the Cowon F2.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855228003
this player can use drag-and-drop to store non-music files. hey! no usb flash drive needed!
now i realize the links i posted to are for North American consumers, sorry i am not familiar with Singaporean. T_T
korockid added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 1:37 pmGet a Psp. It’s Pornable and plays mp3’s/movies/games.
Extrange added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 1:41 pmextrange:
he’s on a budget, and you also have to pay additional costs for memory sticks. as for pornability… orz.
i like the archos better due to its larger capacity (especially since you do not have to buy memory sticks) and the codecs it can play.
ok for those who are whining that i do not like iPod nano in an unfair bias:
yes the ipod nano is a good mp3 play and great considering the size, but it lacks features in my opinion. iPod’s and iTunes do work quite well with each other. if you do use iTunes and do not expect to use any other features, iPod nano is a valid option. but if you do not use iTunes, the Samsung T9 is what i’d recommend.
No comment on the mp3 player selection, just want to note that if you are running Windows, I’d avoid iPod because the PC version of iTunes is a really awful piece of software.
I own a nano personally and is running Vista, luckily there’s a plugin you can buy to make it sync with media player 11. Besides that I am happy with nano, though the color screen is quite pointless since it doesn’t play video.
Hao added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 3:29 pmI pod nano (given that its the new clip on one) is the preferred choice for me, my friend has one and its so small and very easy to use. Light weight, enough memory, long lasting power, nice looking design what more could you ask for.
TokiDoki added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 7:03 pmI vote on the Sansa. I have one, and I love it. You can put anything on it, from avis, pics,to music(duh!)
Very easy to use,install,edit…
honeysempai added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 10:28 pmExtrange: The PSP is not something you can just easily slip in your pocket when you go out.
alkanphel added these pithy words on Feb 24 07 at 10:53 pmcluk.
PSP?! Don’t be silly - if you’re buying it just to play media, it’s a waste not only of a good device, you’ll also be sorely disappointed. Without earphones, audio output is CRAP - volume is hardware enforced reduced.
Not to mention the PSP doesn’t have any internal memory, which requires you to buy one of the more expensive media cards ever to make up for it (on average, a Mem Stick PD is like $20 more than an SD of the same capacity). Also, depending on your firmware, you can’t just stuff AVIs into the stick and expect it to read.
If you aren’t getting a PSP for hacking or gaming, don’t bother - the Archos is a better unit for the same price.
Oh, and don’t bother with the ‘Pod unless you love using iTunes. IIRC the ‘Pod doesn’t “just work” when you throw music inside it in mass storage device mode (tho I hear one of the latest firmwares let you do this). If you’re getting a dedicated MP3 player, it MUST work in Mass Storage mode for ease of use, NOT enforce the use of some proprietary encoding/transfer tool (which many, many companies seem to advocate).
Oh, btw: Creative’s Zen Neeon comes with an FM Radio - with recording capability (Tho Creative once did disable recording in response to the Asian equivalent of the RIAA, and put it back after an end-user backlash). FM Radios in devices are always nice, when there’s a day you forget to load up your unit with teh media. The only other thing on the list that comes with it is the Sansa - unless of course you live in Europe, where that is removed -.-
A chicken passeth by added these pithy words on Feb 27 07 at 5:00 amarrrr. so will anyone recommend it if I am a very iTunes person?
Will using creative be problematic if I only use iTunes for my player?
Impz added these pithy words on Feb 27 07 at 5:03 amOh, I didn’t see this earlier… Anyway, I’ll check with my uncle as youi asked. Don’t know when that will be though.
rdrake added these pithy words on Feb 27 07 at 7:12 am*Impz*jeez you ask some ideas for buying mp3 players!when you have lots of comments!there, you finally reveal what you like! as for me I like Iriver, its cool!
na2niet added these pithy words on Feb 27 07 at 6:30 pmI have a Creative Zen V Plus 2GB, and while it was great for the 6 months I had it, the screen deteriorated badly 2 days ago. Everything is a dark shade of red and there’s a black line across it. It’s probably a dud though, and I find the player on the whole to be a very nice piece of hardware.
But on hindsight I should’ve bought the Sansa. For $10 more I could get a similarly spec’d player with a proper charger and removable battery. The Zen V charges via USB, and you’d have to buy a separate charger if you travel without a laptop. And if the battery deteriorates on the Sansa you can simply a new one.
hitokiri_k added these pithy words on Mar 02 07 at 8:23 amhmm, sansa huh….Hmm, It doesn’t seem too expensive but I am actually looking forward to the IT fair that is coming in around 6 days time.
Then, i will have to start buying!
Impz added these pithy words on Mar 02 07 at 8:31 amI would have said the Zen V plus a few days ago…but…like so many others the screen suddenly went a very dark shade of red and is completely unreadable. This is after only 4 months of use. I wrote Creative and since it is out of the 3 month labor warranty they want me to send it back at my expense, pay a deposit of $25 for diagnostic and repair, and then pay any difference for the labor involved in the repair…and it will take several weeks for the whole process.
Considering this seems to be a very common problem I think it is absurd that they want me to pay for something that is obviously a systemic hardware problem on their end.
Other than that it is an awesome little player…but the “buts” are too big to overcome at this point…don’t go with the Zen V Plus, at least until the bugs are resolved…
