Why is Shuurei so cute when she is young? No wonder Reishin is blushing like he did when Teh Yuushun, Kou Kijin and him were spying on Shuurei.

She is way too cute for a child. 世间本无事 is the title of this episode as it means that the world is peaceful once again, like the start of any era. Just to warn you, an amazing plot resolution is in hand for this episode. I am wowed simply by the excellence of this series.

Episode summary

As Eigetsu rushed to the area, Sakujun was no longer there but the hairpin was still with blood on the floor. Eigetsu said that Shuurei was not wrong to be concerned but it was more important for them to do the work as governors of Sa province. They then rushed over to rescue Teh Yuushun, and the prison was set with fire. Guards of the fallen Sa clan were there as Eigetsu and Shuurei wanted to rush in, only to find out that the official with Kourin (the friend of Ensei) was in fact Teh Yuushun. On the other hand, Eiki was talking to Shou who was in his old form. He then changed it to his young form, saying that it would be easier for Eiki to slap him but she screamed at him that she rather hurt him in his old form and slapped him a few times.

Eiki continued that she knew perfectly well that Enjun would die by Shou’s hand and she was angry that she was never a true part and Shou was the third party every single time since Enjun was always concerned of Shou’s affairs. Enjun only bothered about her issues sometimes but she was happy with that small amount of love. She continued to say that Enjun once said that he already knew how he would die and told her not to cry when it happened. Shou replied that Enjun loved her the most and she said Shou was speaking rubbish. He was asking for trouble when he ended saying to buy some anti-wrinkle cream when he went back to the palace.

Back with the group, the rest were annoyed that Ensei tricked them about Teh. Eigtesu asked how he escaped but it seemed that Ensei’s master, Ro Shisou had knocked out Teh in the cell, dragged him all the way until he woke up grouchily in the streets of Jinka. It clearly showed that Ensei’s teacher was a very violent and quick-action person, as the sun rose up for a new era. As they met up with Kokujun and Shunki, Kokujun asked what the punishment of him being the Sa leader was, and he was expecting to be beheaded. Shuurei instead said the sensible thing that killing him would be useless and now it would be important for him and Shunki to reform Sa clan and stop its rot.

One day, Eiki called Shuurei, Eigetsu, Shunki, Kokujun and the others over to talk about some issues. She explained that it was not Kokujun who had killed them. Sakujun had intended with an incense that caused them to be in a hallucinatory state. As both Kokujun’s father and Kokujun had sniffed it, they were at first about to kill each other but it was in fact his father that had stabbed Chuushou and protected Kokujun to the very end. Eiki said that even though Kokujun did not kill anyone, he was ready to bear the burden of the whole clan which was very similar to Enjun.

saimono36-2.jpg

Eiki then explained that the rumors that Enjun had killed every male in the Sa clan were in fact untrue. In fact, it was one of the many men that had killed everyone but Enjun did not blame him but instead quietly suffered all the blame of the Sa clan. Eigetsu then asked why Enjun took all the blame himself when it was not his fault, while Shuurei replied that she could understand why Enjun actually started a revolt. With Enjun’s character, Shuurei proposed that he did it not to wrestle over power or usurp Ryuuki’s place as emperor, but in fact was intending to uphold the Sa clan and fix its rot.

When a clan leader became the conspirator of an usurped, it gave the king the exact chance to check the true deeds of Sa clan, hence allowing the Sa clan to survive after help was sent. Shuurei said that Enjun must have thought about this for a very long time before setting the decision in order for the long term effects and sacrificing himself for the clan. It seemed clear now that his effort were not in vain as Shunki was impressed while Kourin apologized for misunderstanding Enjun. Kokujun said he was so far from Enjun but he would try to be like him for his entire life as the clan leader. Eiki then asked about the wedding plans, leaving the two blushing badly as everyone laughed.

The next day, Shuurei woke up to see the er hu that Sakujun played. She started to cry as it was clear that something had hurt her badly in her heart. Seiran came over to tell her that the ceremony was about to start, with her voice slightly strained as Seiran seemingly could sense it a little. Teh Yuushun came over to put make up on Shuurei, while Kourin was doing it with Eigetsu, complaining incessantly as she did it. Yuushun had in fact met Shuurei when she was small when Reishin sneaked out with him and Kijin to see her. As the rest were done, we see Kourin complaining how useless Eigetsu was when he could not even tie his belt while complimenting Shuurei. Before they went to the ceremony,

Eigetsu and Shuurei solemnly asked for Ensei and Teh’s help, saying that they were inexperienced and need their guidance. Ensei and Yuushun were embarrassed and told them that they could keep the formalities for the ceremony. As they reached the place, every official in the room looked extremely serious and hostile, but Yuushun assured them that they were delighted that they came since they had two cute governors compared to two boring ones previously. As they declared their governor post, everyone cheered loudly. Back in the palace, Shou talked to Sou Taifu, with Sou saying that he was going to leave the world and said that Shou could join him when he was tired of living. Ryuuki also wondered who Sa province would send when they had their celebration. Shuurei, on the other hand, was thinking of Sakujun while they worked on their paperwork, clearly disturbed by the sudden death of Sakujun.

Thoughts

saimono36-3.jpg

I really thought that this episode will be a major step down in terms of plot interest compared to the climax where Sakujun eventually died. How wrong I was. The story of Enjun, one that has happened 30 over episodes ago, is returned back to the forefront, giving me a shock how detailed the plot is. The event in which Enjun tried to revolt made us think about Enjun as a power hungry person, only to finally be redeemed in Episode 36.

I bet no one expected then that Enjun is anything but someone who is an invisible plot mover for so long. It is really a very good script to think so far ahead of time and I am truly amazed how this is resolved because Enjun’s absolute belief in what he does for the clan is something that everyone will respect. He is definitely an amazing person and Kokujun really has some big boots to fill up here. Yet, I believe genuinely that Kokujun with the same kindness and absolute strength in Shunki will help Sa clan get out of its corrupted state.

That is perhaps the charm of Saiunkoku Monogatari. The resolution of issues and plots might be standard, but it is the complexity and detail that they go into that makes this show extremely good to view.

Teh Yuushun’s appearance as the official is hardly shocking, even though there are several attempts in the previous few episodes to throw you off. The manner in which he is dumped into Jinka is fricking hilarious. I really cannot imagine how Ensei’s teacher actually did it, considering that the cell is completely locked and the only way in was through that small little window.

I highly doubt that Ensei’s teacher has a small arm, which means he somehow can get through the bars and shove Yuushun out or something? I am lost on that fact because it is abstract. I doubt it is at all important but hilarious and mind-puzzling to wonder how his teacher can do it. The greatest part of the whole issue is that he is dumped right at the streets of Jinka. I do wonder how much Ensei suffered under his tutoring.

I left the best for last. What do we make out of Shuurei’s remembrance of Sakujun? There is no dispute that the short time that Shuurei has spent with Sakujun, he has left a very deep impact in her mind. The manner in which he died and the gamble he had with Shuurei that eventually results in his death makes it totally impossible for Shuurei to forget him. Unlike Ryuuki who is simply saying how he loves her (yet not really aggressive per se), Sakujun uses everything mercilessly in his repertoire to physically, emotionally and mentally win over Shuurei.

At the few scenes where Shuurei looks in shock, it seems clear that she might fall in love if given more time. Very importantly too is the fact that we do not really see the body of Sakujun when they returned. That makes no sense when he clearly collapsed and “died” along the tree. He is also physically numbed by the poison, which means that he should be dead, yet my suspicions keep telling me to think more along the fine line. Am I being paranoid whether he really died?

So, what is the situation of Shuurei? Do you think that she is starting to have feelings and form the ability to love others in the romantic manner? I feel that she does simply because of the following reasons.

Ok, kidding about the last part. The next week seems to be about the work that Shuurei is carrying out as the new governor and I cannot wait to see the response of Seiran and Shuurei. I really wonder for quite a few times….Is Shuurei finally falling into the very trap that Seiran has been fighting so hard to defend her from?

OMG! Eiki bitchslapping Shou = _

Ayla added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 7:21 am

geh…ok, don’t know why it cuts it off, but…Eiki bitchslapping Shou=love. And now I feel bad about shipping Houju/Kijin and Shuurei. ;_;

Ayla added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 7:23 am

I really starting to miss ryuuki and his entourage, but still i’m itching to find out what’s the whole plot about…exciting…
Maybe thru Sakujun, she will love Ryuuki back…

jetaime added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 9:37 am

No dead body = Not dead. This is a equation that usually is more true than not in fictional world.

I will not be surprised if Sakujun soon appears again.

wontaek added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 11:32 am

SO TRUE on the no dead body aspect.

Laughing added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 6:18 pm

I definetely agree that Shuurei is beginning to thaw where it comes to her emotions.

And yea if the body was gone that’s usually a big indicator they aren’t dead.

Of course he did seem in a really bad state so I would think someone helped him. Who did I wonder?

D.J added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 7:15 pm

Bwa ha ha. Sakujun is alive. Or some necrophile took his body to fulfil their disgusting fetish. EWWWWWW. lol

I think when Sakujun became unconscious some evil dude/dudette or some good-two-shoes took him away to de-poison him. Though I was disappointed at first that my favorite death scene isn’t a death scene anymore, I’m glad that Sakujun has a chance of entertaining us more in the future. Perhaps the author of the original novel loved Sakujun too much to get rid of him so early. Whatever the reason, I’m happy. My favorite villain has more screen time coming up, yay! Or that is what I hope.

Thanks Impz for your summary. I’m really glad that you updated us. I agree with you about Shuurei’s feelings. She does have some feelings for him and there was no resistance in the last kiss scene. Like she said to Seiran, even though she doesn’t want to react to Sakujun, his face is so nice that her heart beats fast for him. lol. The power of a bishounen.

Well, can’t wait till your next summary. Take care. Peace.

@Ayla: Shipping? I do not understand the term too much.

@Jetaime: I do wonder if he will be missed for any longer, since after this arc, it is likely that Ryuuki will appear more especially after this. I am sure he will find some reason to meet up with her, considering his complete devotion.

@Wontaek: Same idea completely. I find that I only believe someone is dead when the body is seen. Sometimes, even seeing the body does not mean that the character is dead (Aizen in Bleach for a bleach reference), though that is quite rare. Sakujun is a good anti-thesis hero/villain that should have an appearance to shake Shuurei’s resolve later. I think he will.

Yes, I will not be surprised if he appears, though it will not be any time soon in my opinion. What if he turns to be the vicious ally? Woot!

@Laughing: That makes three of us :)

@DJ: In my opinion, it must be someone that we have not seen at all. I mean, I cannot think of any other characters that can be taking Sakujun away unless it is something warped on the grounds where Reishin found Sakujun, kept him alive and sadistically brainwashed him for pure sadistic delight. I think that might work out…somehow.

@Maria: On your first sentence, okkkkkkk. I didn’t know some of my readers has that form of fetish. Scary!

I believe that he will return, simply because the author had the foresight to wrap up a plot situation that happens like 30 over episodes ago, which really shows that the author knows what is going on. In that case, it will be little wonder if he returns. I am sure of it and I do wonder what his re-appearance will cause Shuurei to feel. I think she has reached the stage where she is not madly in love but has feelings for Sakujun to the extent that she is thinking of him actively. The last thing that Seiran ever wants is coming true. Oh no!!!

Impz added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 7:33 pm

I agree, Shuurei is unbelievably cute as a kid!

In regards to the Sakujun deal, there is a good chance that he may not be dead (but he could have also really physically died), and if he really hasn’t he probably won’t show up for a while, seeing as this is continuing to a second season, it’ll probably be a few episodes away (right when we least expect it). So really, you’re not being paranoid at all. I also like the idea that there’s a third party involved in the Sakujun’s body disappearing deal…

I actually think that due to the emotions that she’s experiencing because of Sakujun, Shuurei could go in two directions: either open up more, thus returning more love to those around her (Ryuuki etc.), or she’s going to be even more guarded, because the emotions that she’s feeling kind of crept up on her, so she may think that she needs to be more guarded to protect herself from being picked (so she’ll have more ‘thorns’ than before). Also, since Sakujun is stuck so firmly in her mind, and Ryuuki and Sakujun are really similar, the emotions that she feels for them may overlap? Just a thought…

lamB added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 7:44 pm

I ‘heard’ that in the novel Sakujun didn’t die, and I have a good feeling that he really is alive. Maybe a new evil character rescued him. All those stupid drama for nothing XD I feel bad for Seiran in this episode. I feel like Shuurei neglected him.:( Didn’t she notice that he was unconscious in the carriage? She didn’t even ask why he was unconscious. I do think Shuurei has feelings for Sakujun, or else she won’t cry or be hung up on him like that. I don’t care who Shuurei falls in love with anymore at this point. Sakujun, Ryuuki, or Seiran–they all have good impressions on me. I just don’t want to see Seiran being neglected. It pains me to see him like that. *tears* It’s like how I get worked up over Haji in Blood+ whenever Saya forgets that he exists despite all the things he’s done for her.

Ricaryx added these pithy words on Feb 06 07 at 11:48 pm

@Lamb: I honestly do wonder about the emotions overlapping since it is clear that the feelings that Shuurei feels about Sakujun is much more intense compared to the emotions she feels with Ryuuki and Seiran. Yes, the three are similar in some ways but in her eyes, they are pretty different.

I got a feeling that she will be more open since she realizes that knot in her heart.

@Ricaryx: Oh, he didn’t? SPOILER!! just kidding but I guess it’s taken for granted that if you do not see any body, it means no death as yet. Seiran, no matter how you think about it, looks like the one that will be forsaken.

I wonder how he will take it when Sakujun comes back and I hardly think that the stupid drama is really stupid since it does solve several things and explores the deeper emotions of Shuurei and Seiran. I see the both of them developing very well as characters, fleshed out with weaknesses rather than perfect beings.

Impz added these pithy words on Feb 07 07 at 6:49 am

Huh. I wonder how Shuurei will react when Sakujun reappears… because, yeah, he’s so not dead. Habeas corpus!

If her emerging feelings are any indication, there will be tears of relief; if her past actions are any indication, there will be fists of rage. ^_^ *That* is going to be one really good episode.

I kind of wished that was the end of him — even though I did perversely like him — because I’d like to see her advance her relationship with Ryuuki or Seiran, and as was said before, that was a dramatically beautiful death. (have yet to see it tho, still 6 eps behind)

Not that it matters or anyone cares, but in a past entry I mentioned Rou Ensei when I meant Kou Reishin. And I was trying so heard to keep them all straight in my head. Sigh.

As always, thanks for the summary. They’re nice to look forward to in addition to episode releases.

apexantapex added these pithy words on Feb 07 07 at 10:48 am

Trying so “hard,” not “heard.” Agh!

May we have a preview button someday, please? ^_^

apexantapex added these pithy words on Feb 07 07 at 10:50 am

With all that was said and mentioned, I have a feeling that Sakujun and Shuurei won’t ever cross paths at all even if he isn’t dead. Although, I do think Sakujun will do stuff from the shadows and probably leave tiny traces of his existence so that Shuurei will be reminded of him.

As for the intensity of Shuurei’s feelings toward Sakujun being more than her feelings toward Ryuuki and Seiran, I think it’s highly doubtful. I’ve always had this impression that Shuurei finds Sakujun attractive, bold and unique but never to the point that she would fall for him. I just can’t seem to get that sort of vibe between the two although Sakujun did fall for Shuurei. I didn’t notice the lingering look or the no-resistance-when-being-kissed. I’ve always thought that Shuurei wanted to know more about Sakujun just like she wanted to know more about Ryuren or Kourin or Eigetsu or Ensei. The only difference is that Sakujun is so much better looking than the three I mentioned. Same goes for her weeping. Shuurei feels somewhat responsible for Sakujun’s death by not being able to do anything to save him. Her curiosity and compassion for the people she meets are no different than her curiosity and compassion of Sakujun. As for the kissing thing, I doubt any girl would push or reject a kiss from a familiar gorgeous guy who is obviously dying before her. I’ve always seen this pair as having the unrequited love. But that’s just me.

And it’s very true about Seiran, no matter how one looks at the whole thing, it seems to be that Seiran will not be the one to win Shuurei’s heart. Btw, I’m a closet Shuurei x
Seiran fan. ^^

As for Kou Hojou/Kijin (happily fangirls and faints) Move not, while my prayers’ effect I take. (lol).^^ Isn’t he just perfect? The only Saiunkoku character whom I will consider giving up Seiran for. But what the heck! I’ll take ‘em both. ^^

And Mr. Impz, compared to your other scary necrophiliac readers, I’m so much tamer. So join us in the Mai x Naru love alliance.

ThirteenSugars added these pithy words on Feb 08 07 at 1:38 am

I meant “compared to the ‘four’ I mentioned.” (sighs) The metric system is so confusing. I also second Apexantapex’s request for a preview/edit button. ^^

ThirteenSugars added these pithy words on Feb 08 07 at 1:42 am

Actually, we did try to have a preview/edit button, only to realize that it does lag sometimes when you do the typing, which is also troublesome. I mean, the letters do not even appear when I do the preview and it’s certainly sad because Impz is not the tech person in this blog. That distinction goes to Mr Admin. Still, we will see what we can do but it might not be implemented too soon ><

@Apex: I bet Shuurei will go like…WHAT IN THE HELL AND turn all violent to whack him. Still, it is perhaps for a long time before we next see Sakujun, if we do see him in the first place.

@13sugars: I am trying to comment about your comment but found no other words to say. I just find that it is perhaps a little bit of romance brewing in Shuurei’s heart rather than none at all. You are also not a closet Seiran x Shuurei fan. It’s pretty blatant actually, ahaha~

No, i will not join your dark side. Masako forever!

Impz added these pithy words on Feb 08 07 at 7:50 am

Impz: meant to mention this earlier… “shipping,” in this context, comes from “relationship,” creating a slang verb out of a noun. It’s pairing two characters together in a [romantic] relationship, often non-canon pairs. It’s fanfiction slang, really.

(I double-checked it in urbandictionary.com, so I think that’s right. Very useful site. ^^)

apexantapex added these pithy words on Feb 08 07 at 9:10 am

arrrrr. Wait, in that case, Ayla is actually on Kijin and Shuurei before?

…hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

…hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

…hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I am shocked.

Impz added these pithy words on Feb 09 07 at 7:01 am

@13sugars: i think shuurie wept over Sakujun because she feels responsible and that she has developed new feelings for him. Otherwise, she wouldn’t hide her tears from seiran if the tears are simply from sympathy.

who the hell rescued sakujun then? I think sakujun is too shrewd to be left vulnerable, so he might have plan his escaped. But then again, Reishin and Seiran are quiet devious themselves. Anything goes i guess!

this episode disappointed me. :(

lallala added these pithy words on Mar 23 07 at 5:19 am

I don’t think he has planned his escape because he is close to death. The question on who rescued him will be an interesting one and it might be slowly resolved in the 2nd season, i feel.

Impz added these pithy words on Mar 23 07 at 7:07 am

i couldnt wait and took a glimpse of episode 37-39. dissapointed not to see sakjun. will he make an appearance again? i want to see ryuuki vs sakujun in wits and swordmanship.
