I totally adore Shunki x Kokujun. They are just one of the most “awwwww” type of couples, with the sweetenings in the whole relationship being six to seven over dosages of total sugarly love.

The phrase of this week’s episode,以毒攻毒, means to counter poison with poison and it applies to the scenario in the last scene of this episode.

Seiran fans will love it, I bet.

Episode summary

This episode picks off from the previous one when Shuurei and Shunki went down the dungeon to find Kokujun only to hear a scream, while Ensei and Eigetsu arrived to the ceremony. At the cell, we see Kokujun stoning until Shunki gave him a tight slap to wake him up. He finally regained his senses as his tears started to fall, saying that he had killed his father and Chuushou. Kokujun added that he had lost the last bit of humanity about him but Shunki said that it was impossible as he was such a kind person that would not even hurt a flower. Kokujun said that he was strange and kept thinking about killing, but Shunki assured that she trusted him.

Shunki then said it did not matter whether he did kill or not, but most importantly, it was the regret that he could not do anything to stop this absurdity in time. She continued with her declaration to assume the authority of Sa clan if he was to simply escape as she took out the Sa ring that she found around Chuushou and would take on all responsibility. Just before she put the ring on, Kokujun stopped her and wore the ring instead, saying that he could not allow her to be burdened with his own problems. He admitted that he would regret for a long time after this that he was unable to do anything.

Yet, he would not be overcome by it but to carry the burden of Sa clan on his shoulders. With that, the spirit of Enjun appeared, encouraging Kokujun that he was a kind man and not to lose his humanity ever. Enjun said it was all right to cry, but also to be a strong man to support Sa clan. As the spirit of Enjun disappeared, Kokujun said that he was weak and warned Shunki that there was a long journey ahead. He then added that he wanted Shunki to be always around him to support and believe in him, with Shunki agreeing in tears. After they resolved their differences, Shuurei formally regarded Kokujun as the head of the Sa clan and told him that he had to shoulder the responsibility as the Sa clan. Kokujun agreed as he carried the body of his father out of the cell.

Kokujun then arrived to Eiki’s room, with Eiki seeing the vision of Enjun for a moment and the ring. Kokujun then answered the call of responsibility by Eiki as Eiki told him that he was a common man, yet one that would protect the little things that he had. Eiki then told him to prepare for the ceremony as Shunki came in with Shuurei. Eiki acknowledged the trouble caused by the Sa clan and asked Shunki whether she would regret being with Kokujun. Shunki said that she wished to be as happy as Eiki with Enjun, as Eiki laughed jovially about the low possibility of that happening.

saimono34-2.jpg

At the ceremony, Ensei and Eigetsu noticed that Eiki, Kokujun and Sakujun were all missing as the other Sa clan members gathered around, laughing at Eigetsu’s appearance and belittling him. The other clan members were talking about how Enjun previous poisoned everyone by gathering them together and dissing Chuushou for thinking that he was going to be the clan leader. Ensei checked the walls and Eigetsu poured the wine on the floor, as they realized that the walls were extremely thin and the room was tilted. They then told everyone that the house was going to collapse soon as Chuushou’s attempt to kill everyone was realized.

The troops of Teh Yuushun and Sai Shou’s elite mercenary troops arrived, as Eigetsu used his power as the governor to arrest all the Sa clan members for disrupting the peace of Kouling, with him saying that he would talk to the clan leader of Sa for further punishment. The clan leader would of course suffer the heaviest consequences as no one dared to stand up. Eiki and the rest then appeared, saying that she would be the guardian of Kokujun, the next clan leader, with the Sa clan ring on Kokujun’s finger as the defining judge. Eigetsu also formally approved of Kokujun’s position as clan leader of Sa as he left for investigations with Shuurei and Eigetsu while the other Sa clan members were slowly arrested.

At the cell, the young form of Shou talked to the dwindling spirit of Enjun, saying that he wanted to show Enjun the start of a new era. He wanted to let Enjun rest in peace. Enjun’s voice then said that Kokujun never killed anyone as Shou replied that he knew it as Shou told him not to worry anymore. Enjun laughed, asking Shou who was the one that made him unable to die in peace as his spirit dissipated.

Sakujun was quietly playing on the er hu as Seiran arrived, asking Sakujun to drink the poison. Sakujun asked why he did not intend to attack him directly, but Seiran reiterated that he wanted to see Sakujun being convicted by the law. Seiran then added that no cell could keep Sakujun. Sakujun teased how Seiran intended to get him to drink the poison. Seiran said that he intended to defeat him in battle and forced it down his throat. Seiran continued to speak as he intended to decide in a game where they had poured Seiran’s poison in 5 of the wine cups and 5 lethal poison in another 5. Sakujun said Seiran had nothing in exchange for him, but Seiran mentioned that he was an obstacle to Sakujun’s love of Shuurei. Sakujun agreed as the game started.

Thoughts

saimono34-3.jpg

Honestly, I really do wonder who the killer of Chuushou and his father was. Kokujun seemed to acknowledge that it was him who did it, yet Shou and the spirit of Enjun said that Kokujun did not kill anyone. So, who in the world killed the two. However, I do agree that whoever killed the two was not the important issue, but the issue of resolving the leadership of the Sa clan. I guess, it was not really too much of an important detail who the real killer was, but the journey in which Kokujun finally assumed leadership and guts was the true thing to note.

Just to repeat, I find that the relationship of Shunki and Kokujun is so beautiful that words can hardly explain how great it is. They have so much love and trust of each other that it is amazing how they can withstand being separated for such a long period of time. I am so glad that they can finally get back together and it was so sweet when Kokujun said that Shunki’s voice was extremely sweet and music to his ears. Shunki’s assurance that she would be there forever for Kokujun was also a really big “awwww” moment for me.

I personally feel surprised at the strategy used by Chuushou to kill off the whole Sa clan. I am expecting initially for him to do some form of poisoning during the feast and the likes, as it will be technically illogical for anyone to repeat the same way of killing done thirty years ago. If anything, the most obvious method to eliminate your clan will usually be the less expected method of killing, which would be good.

However, the current way of elimination is also ingenious. I mean, to build a house with thin walls and floors, so as to slowly cause the house to collapse in an instant is a slow death that no one will be able to expect until the weight of the people in the house tilts it over. Hence, it is pretty amazing since Chuushou, with his brutal ways, has chosen just about the most subtle way of killing a whole group of people at one go without any high suspicion. Only Ensei and Eigetsu will be perceptive enough to such situations.

They are too darn smart.

I am also seriously disturbed at the “game” that Seiran and Sakujun is playing. They are literally playing with their lives with this game and it severely disturbs me that I have no clue who will be the one surviving (*grumbles for their good use of a climax*). I am sure that there will somehow be an interference in the form of Shuurei or someone, but I am not too sure. The whole chance roll of the dice and drinking the assigned wine cups just makes for a disturbing climax of the resolution between Sakujun and Seiran. Man, whoever is the director is an evil freak that loves to keep us on our toes.

Lastly, everything is starting to be resolved and I am glad that Shuurei and Eigetsu can finally be appointed as the governor. The choice of Kokujun as the clan leader is a tad interesting too.

So who do you hope to win the battle of “Shuurei”? Sakujun or Seiran?

@Na2niet: You are trying to understand Japanese? God, i am not even going to try doing that because I know I will go insane trying to figure out. I am actually expecting him to take responsibility but the manner which they did it is realistic, since they made Shunki a really strong character to support him, like how Eiki supported Enjun. It’s really all cool.

@Wontaek: The love of the main characters want me to say Seiran but I think Sakujun will add a nice plot twist if he wins. Yes, I know I am evil but Sakujun makes a nice little twist to the whole story in my humble opinion.

Me thinks Shunki and Kokujun very sweet too. :)

Hey, I still don’t understand why the old man wants to kill off his whole clan. Or Enjun as well.

Maybe Seiran has already drunk the antidote to any poison so doesn’t matter what he drinks? :P

I still think it’s Sakujun who kills both the old man and his father. After all, he killed his Shunki’s parents.

*must not read spoilers, must not read spoilers…* I think you’ve convinced me to go dl the raw… I’m still back on ep 26 :(

But aren’t Shunki and Kokojun cousins? That’s a little? if you ask me.

Reslez added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 12:29 pm

Did somebody say sugar and sweet? ^^

The first season is finally coming to its end. I’m worried of how I will survive until the second season starts airing. How will I get my fix?! I need to calm down.

I suppose I’m a little bit ahead of you on who will win the Seiran vs. Sakujun showdown which I will not spoil for anyone, I do have to say that their challenge and conversation are probably one of the best I’ve seen so far in the anime history. It’s so ingenious and cleverly well made. Well done, Sai Yukino-san! ^^

This side of Seiran’s character makes me love him more and more. His obsessive-compulsive behavior related to anything Shuurei makes him so adorably irresistible. He is just as twisted as Sakujun is. Seiran just hides it better (lol). One would even think that the winner of the game will be the crazier of the two. How can anyone not like/fall in low with Seiran? He’s so darn gorgeous with a smile that can turn earth to a heaven. He’s absolutely lovable. His skills are perfect or at least almost unmatched. He cooks. He cleans. He drinks 5-6 poisons with such ease and bravado just to save his beloved ojou-sama. He’s so much more! I mean he’s like the ultimate ideal man (okay fine, male anime character). It’s another reason to really applaud Sai Yukino-sensei. To create such a character is so brilliant! Okay, okay. I’ll stop my Seiran-fangirling here because I might seriously lose my senses. ^^

As for my humble opinion, no matter how sweet and awe-inspiring Shunki x Kokujun love is, I still think that nothing can compare to the love Ryuuki has for Shuurei, in which we are yet to see whether she will reciprocate or not. But you’re very right about Shunki and Kokujun being very well paired.

As for the real killer, I didn’t even think about it. I was too busy fangirling over Seiran that I barely paid attention to the other stuff. ^^

Since it seems you’re now fully recovered. I believe your comment of, “but I think Sakujun will add a nice plot twist if he wins,

I don’t want Sakujun to die…i love his character. *cries bitterly*

But weren’t they beginning to fight in the shorts for next week. Maybe Seiran takes a swing? Either way….please don’t die Sakujuuuuuuuunnnnnn. >_

Ningnomaningnong added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 3:14 pm

Hmmm the end of this reminds me of the poison scene from Princess Bride. Gah Sakujun looks like a girl in that screen shot.

ahem Shuurei x Ryuuki!!! ~runs~

YamiKakyuu added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 3:48 pm

Nice summary as usual Impz! Thanks…

Seiran is as forever charming, no surprise there.. but I’m quite surprised that Sakujun would actually agree to Seiran’s crazy idea just because he is an obstacle to Sakujun’s love of Shuurei. To put his life in danger for Shuurei could means he really do like Shuurei.. Let’s imagine Sakujun used to be bad and cruel because he has not find anything worth loving in this world, but Shuurei changes that now. So really if that’s the case, I wouldn’t want Sakujun to die either… >_

babypris added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 6:10 pm

“He is just as twisted as Sakujun is. Seiran just hides it better (lol).”

Big LOL! I totally agree. My first impression of Seiran is like a silver-haired angel who doesn’t know how to get angry, but now here he is playing with death just so he couldn’t lose Shuurei. (Darn lucky Shuurei x.x) He’s actually that extreme. I want to see how Shuurei will react once she finds out what he was up to. lol If this were real life, then I would be so scared for him, but alas, this is anime so I bet neither Sakujun nor Seiran will die from this. Something will interrupt them for sure.

And I think Kokujun really did kill his father and Chuushou physically, but at the same time, he’s not himself so Enjun claimed that it wasn’t him. I seriously thought he was going to go Kamikaze. Thank God for Shunki. ^.^

Aww man, 5 more episodes to go, right? :| The season is about to end and Ryuuki is still stuck in his palace. What’s going to happen to his love life? lol

I’m very tempted to type a huge spoiler that I could almost feel the force of ten thousand angels holding me back from doing so. Even a single hint would give all away. (sighs) I seriously need to stop going here for more than once a day. ^^

Ryuuki x Shuurei is a very natural pairing for me. I never used to even consider Seiran x Shuurei… but I’m starting to reevaluate that now. Who would be a better partner for her, Seiran or Ryuuki? Decisions, decisions…

Looks: Tossup
Rank: Reigning emperor beats household servant/soldier.
Hairstyle and dress: I’d have to give this to Ryuuki. I don’t like the little top ponytail thing Seiran has going on. His armor is also not as cool as Ryuuki’s robes.
Personality: Ryuuki has that sweet but needy little boy thing going on, where Seiran is more of a scary obsessive guard dog. This may be a matter of personal opinion but I’d go with Ryuuki.
Devotion: I’d say they’re equally devoted to her. Tie.
Reciprocation: Shuurei doesn’t have clear romantic feelings for either party. She has also flatly rejected Ryuuki multiple times. She regularly confides her thoughts and feelings to Seiran, however. Point for Seiran.
Opportunity: While the Emperor’s away the Little Whirlwind will play. Ryuuki’s off at court while Seiran clings to his mistress’s side. Another point for Seiran.

OK, summing up leaves Ryuuki 5, Seiran 4, leaving Ryuuki the underwhelming victor. I think we need more episodes to decide who wins :)

Reslez added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 7:17 pm

@Lys: It’s simple why he wants to kill off everyone, it’s to make sure that no one that is powerful and related to the Sa clan can usurp his authority on matters. I mean, you have people in the clan clearly against you. Without any law to restrict your actions, what do you do?

KILL THEM.

After reading the comment on Ric, I have to say that Kokujun did kill his father and Chuushou but Enjun said he did not because he was not in the right frame of mind. A person so kind like Kokujun must have been pushed to the edge to do it.

@13sugars: I think that the anime shows well about the relationship between Kokujun and Shunki. In my opinion, it is not just an one-sided reliance of Kokujun toward Shunki but Shunki is also somewhat reliant on the kindness of Kokujun to protect everything. She is strong but she’s still human, which makes the relationship even more beautiful and I must say in my opinion, even better than Shuurei with Ryuuki or Seiran.

Yes, i still wish for Sakujun to survive, win the battle but someone does come in time to save Seiran. Sigh, you are sure a violent gal with all the cannons and all.

*cough cough*

@Ning: I don’t really like Sakujun a lot but I do like his constant mental and physical teasing of Shuurei. It’s so fun to see her being frustrated and annoyed. Ahaha~, yes, I can be a sadist at times.

@Ric: I wonder too how they will resolve it but seeing that there’s a 2nd season, i doubt anything about Ryuuki will be truly resolved. Sigh. That also leaves Seiran with all the chances to lure Shuurei to him. Ho. ho. ho.

Seiran x Shuurei forever~

And said earlier, i agree with your analysis of Enjun’s observation. It sounds pretty logical and I did not think of that.

So, you are thinking that Kokujun will go psychotic and kill Shuurei too in the cell?

@reslez: as usual, nice analysis. Meh >_< Why is seiran losing desu~

Impz added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 10:42 pm

Ah, I have nothing to argue with your comments and opinions about Kokujun and Shunki’s love as mine doesn’t differ at all. However, I will stick to my opinion of how nothing can compare to Ryuuki’s love for Shuurei which she has yet to reciprocate. There’s just something I see very special about it, and perhaps the fact that the anime has been showing it from the beginning adds more to my favor. ^^

Surprisingly, I’m a Seiran-fangirl but not a Seiran x Shuurei supporter. It is sweet and fun to think about the possibility of the two but I think they will not be well-suited for one another, unfortunately.

As for your comment about me; I’m not really violent, just passionate. My apologies for coming off too passionate or extreme in my posts. ^^ Anyway, I guess that’s my cue to stop posting comments and keep my opinions to myself (sighs). I suppose I deserve that. Well, maybe I can lurk around for more of your Saiunkoku and Ghost Hunt blogging which I hope is okay. ^^

ThirteenSugars added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 11:44 pm

@13sugars: i am teasing you T_T…Hah, you are barely anywhere passionate and at least you are being rational. God, i have seen totally bad ones so don’t stop commenting ;_; because I always am keen to listen to what you say with your detailed analysis of the series. They always help me with the writing, believe it or not.

That said, I have to agree somewhat with your analysis of Seiran x Shuurei, even though I am always wishful with it ^_^;;;

@babypris: yet another example why we should have a seiran x shuurei forever! ^+^

Impz added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 11:58 pm

Yeah, new episode again! Okie, i love all the male characters in the anime, they are so so so the handsome….except for Sakujun! I would lo0ve to see Ryuuki reunited with Shuurei! Thks for the update!

@musicfaery: high five to a fellow supporter of the sacred pairing!

So…i wonder what will really happen to sakujun!

great episode… Seiran just seems more cool with this dark streak in him. But yes, Sakujun’s innuendos with Shuurei are also interestings. can’t bear for either to kick the bucket.

i’m seeing how this season will pan. Maybe Seiran gets poisoned and Shuurei has to save him and their love blossoms!! Emperor comes in a little later and sees it and becomes sad…
Season One ends…
heh heh.

Seiran x Shuurei Banzai!
