unfortunately I dropped my portable hd today, lost about the same amount as you did. cant express in words how annoyed I was… but ye its annoying because its not that I don’t burn to dvd its just that a dvd is 4.5 gigs or so and you kinda have to wait until you have that amount of the same series to fill it, hence the chance of losing the content that you are keeping up to date with (anime that is in the progress of finishing) all in one go.

Post is pretty old but I thought I would put in my two bits. I have a 500gb softmodded xbox running Xbox media center. I store all my anime on that. It gives me the best of both worlds, Great storage and the ablity to view all my shows on my HD set.

I have to use CD-Rs to burn my anime on, as my DVD burner won’t let me burn AVI or any of the other fansub formats.

I do plan on upgrading the DVD burner. That would make things much more simple. I have to do something soon though, as I’m running out of space on the hard drive quickly.

External HDD! I do keep my anime series in my 100gb external hdd! Burning them to DVD is a bother. I used to burn it on CD-Rs before I have my external hdd. I also experienced storing it on my main disk drive and after the pc got invaded with viruses, I had no choice but to delete all of the series I had in the hd.

TokiDoki ^_^ $50 for 10GB isn’t worth it. You should apply for the TPG ADSL2+ service. It’s like $50 a month for $18 GB. I’m on the $60 for 30GB plan… yet somehow the download limit seems not enough. Have no idea what my brothers download

Couple of weeks ago when finals were over i started hearing a funny noise on my 300gb HDD. I have 2 3oogb and i 80gb. One of the 300gb Hdds can hibernate on its own so that it can avoid being burnt out, however the other one started making a funny noise and then i just freaked out when i started reading all this stuff online about folks whos hdd just died and how they lost a massive amount of anime. so i started buying a shitload of blank dvds and i have been burning like crazy. Its pain in the ass but believe me id rather it be a pain and have all my anime than lost it all.

Staples is having a sale of 50 blank DVD+R for only 20 bucks. I bought like 3 of those last week.

U can also recover all the anime u lost but it would cost u like a 100 bucks if u go to bestbuy.

When I read this post I think my heart stopped for a sec… I keep alot of my anime on my 80 gig harddrive ready to burn onto DVD. On normal circumstances my ISP lets me download only 10 gigs a months yes thats right ONLY 10 gigs a month including upload data. If I were to lose a HD like you did i’d lose 5-8 months worth of downloaded data, I pay around $50 a month so that would mean id lose $250-$400 AUD worth of DATA. So lets all prety this never and i mean NEVER EVER EVER happens to me lol…hehe…or anyone else ^^

Ouch! That happened to me once. I lost almost 120GB of data when my 3.25 soratech portable HDD casing exploded (the capcaitor inside got burnt). Since then i made it a pt to always burn my stuffs on DVDs.

I put everything onto my 300GB internal HDD and when the series is completed I burn it on DVD…

I watch it, keep it for like 3 months, then delete it when I need space for more anyway. I wish I had a bigger Harddrive…. only 40GB

Whenever I hear about all those new 500gb HDs coming out I always think how horrible it would be if that HD died. I usually burn out my anime, mangas and etc to DVDs to have a hardcopy.

But even then, DVDs will develop dye fade errors as time goes by so you cannot rely on them 100%. My backup for that is an external HD which gives me faster access to all those backed-up data.

Imho, RAIDing your HDs is just a waste of money. DVDs + ext HD is a much cheaper solution.

i generally keep it on DVDs…but well, I am not too worried since i seldom rewatch my series at all. UInless they are very good, in which, i will buy the VCDs and DVDs.

I have two and a half terabytes (’cause I’m 30 with a good paying job) on various externals.
A house fire could probably wipe me out though; It would take a year just to get it all back.
