RARRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Ever have those instances where you lose everything in the blink of an eye?
Well, I’ve been somewhat annoyed… mainly because just a day ago, I lost about 70GB of anime that I had not burned onto DVDs yet.
Yep… 70GB. Stupid stupid portable harddrive, why must you fail meeeeeeee. On top of that, I lost about 10GB of random manga, all my Suzumiya Haruhi and Zero no Tsukaima japanese novel scans, some backed up school-related files and work.
Yeah, so it’s literally ‘meh,’ Haha.
Anyhow, I guess this brings up a pretty good topic anyways. Hey, I can be glad right? My misfortune may have brought about discussion amongst anime lovers regarding a pretty common problem (at least to those that I’ve talked to): How do you guys handle/manage your anime wares?
From my personal assumptions, I’m thinking that most people either fall into one of few categories:
1. Have humongous 028510385710 terabyte harddrives on which they simply horde their material.
2. Download then burn to DVDs (I do that… but I had a backlog unfortunately).
3. Simply watch and delete afterwards (sort of pointless to download with the advent of Youtube?)
4. None of the above. Simply mooch/leech off of friends’ hard work. (I used to do that, lol)
What do all of you do? Anybody have some good advice on the topic of anime storage/management for someone like me? lol. Being that I’m limited to a laptop (about 80GB of freespace out of my 100GB) and a portable HDD (about 94GB of freespace out of 100GB), I’ve been slaved to simply burning DVDs. Should I try and purchace one of those enormous 300GB portable HDDs? They do come relatively cheap nowadays (my gripe is 7200rpm or whatever minimum)… or should I simply resume with my DVDs.
I guess my biggest argument is simply which one is more cost effective? Given that DVDs are becoming cheaper and cheaper nowadays, I don’t mind that as much… but then again, the cost does gradually add up. Figuring, a series can fit on approximately one DVD, hm…
290GB / approximately 4.5GB per DVD = 64DVDs
Yeah, it’s still cost effective to buy DVDs I suppose. Anyhow, I digress. So, what do you all think? How do you store the multiple gigabytes of anime that you (and we) all seem to horde?

I have combined storage of 750GB, and I burn to DVD when that fills up. Most cost effective would probably be hard drive storage, but if mine were to ever fail…
Shirukii added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 9:29 pmI’m about the same with Shirukii but with only about 400GB storage(300 External 100 Internal). I think what your doing now is fine (maybe get a few hundred more gigs) you probably just got unlucky. Just burn to DVD’s when you need to and never overfill your harddrive. People tend to do it by accident. Also I put what I’ve seen on the external and what I need to watch on the internal so it wont be a big deal if I ever lose it.
Faust721 added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 9:44 pmWell since my computer is ancient and I had lost my Itunes library twice. I ended up getting an external myself. I save to that and then burn what I download.
(Hopefully I’ll be getting a new comp sometime this year)
However I usually only burn if its a new series I’m really enjoying. For those I’m interested in but not sure if I want to spend the time or money downloading or burning I keep up with them on youtube.
Um I’m almost afraid to ask looking at the picture, but, what the hell happened?
D.J added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 9:45 pmI had a 320gb hdd fail on me just recently. Made me wonder if I should run a raid array to store my anime.
I do burn my anime to dvds too, but I don’t particularly like it. They keep getting scratched even when i do nothing to them.
TedFox added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 9:50 pmRight now I have an 80GB external hard disk as a primary back-up, and a DVD writer. When my PC’s free space gets smaller I back up. When the series I’m watching ends I burn ASAP. I also have two DVD+RWs, but I don’t usually use them as writing to them is quite a very slow process.
Oh, you might want get 7200 rpm SATA hard disks. They’re very fast, and if you can afford it, go for more than 80GB back up. Also, you might want to purchase the hard disk and an external enclosure, and just assemble them yourself. It’s cheaper than branded external drives out there (although if you go SATA the SATA-capable external enclosure is also a bit pricey, at least for me). And buy Seagate, the quality of the hard drive is a must you know, so don’t penny pinch.
hayase added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 9:50 pmYeah, seems like an external drive and burning to a dvd is the way to go. Sadly, I don’t have a DVD burner, so I have to burn a lot of cds. Either that or finally get off my duff and build that linux server and back up to that. And given the noise my second hard drive made today, I need to get a move on backing things up.
badger11 added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 9:59 pmYeah, luckily I didn’t export my entire music collection from my laptop HDD to my portable like I was planning on doing a week ago. That would have been a good 60GB of mp3s down the drain.
As to portable HDDs, are Seagates the premiere? I’ve been trying to scrap together any information I can in regards to portable HDD quality, but am still pretty much shooting a blank in regards to consistent comments/opinions.
I’m thinking of purchasing a decent 300GB-ish portable HDD to do more holding before I am pressed to burn anything, lol.
Mr. Admin added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 10:08 pmwow…really sorry to hear that.
seeing how i always delete anime after i watch them…guess it means I don’t love anime enough…?
ohphive added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 10:17 pmlol, it’s up to preference really. I save my copies because I may want to rewatch some series in the future. My sisters like to watch series that I recommend as well, and I can’t afford to donate my laptop or harddrive to them for a month since I’m away at school, lol.
Mr. Admin added these pithy words on Jan 14 07 at 10:42 pmI tend to just burn everything no matter how good or bad the series turns out to be. I figure if i spend the time and effort downloading it, I might as well just burn it to DVD. Maybe I’m also anal about saving things. Good to know I’m not the only one.
I only have about 200GB in all of storage, so I’m constantly burning stuff to free up space. Sometimes, if the anime’s are 12-14 episodes, you can burn 2 series on one DVD. I also take hits and just burn a bunch of crap onto dvd for cleaner burning later when stuff is finished. That’s about all the help I can give, but I’m sure you already have tried it all.
retsgip added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 12:15 amMr. Admin, one word: *ouch*
For me, it’s more both burning and backup.. I’ve got one dvd stands full of burnt animes… and I use 2 80G HDD as backup, do that like once a month / 2 months… and the current HDD is 250G… I burn finished series onto DVDs, the backup are for unfinished, or things that I’d like a better quality version etc etc..
I can understand that DVD cost adds up.. but for some reason I don’t burn that often… plus series tends to finish up around the same time.. buy DVDs in 50 bundles.. they’re cheaper. =D
Let us know if you want to ‘recover’ some of your lost animes… I’ve lost 80G before, so I feel your pain…
babypris added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 12:16 amSame thing happened to me about a year ago, and I lost 80 Gb of anime… Since then I’ve been burning the shows I want to keep on DVD. As for fiability, there’s still a chance that the discs get scratched, but at least if I lose a DVD, I lose only one show or two, and not the whole.
Skh added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 12:30 amI have two and a half terabytes (’cause I’m 30 with a good paying job) on various externals.
A house fire could probably wipe me out though; It would take a year just to get it all back.
i generally keep it on DVDs…but well, I am not too worried since i seldom rewatch my series at all. UInless they are very good, in which, i will buy the VCDs and DVDs.
Impz added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 3:55 amWhenever I hear about all those new 500gb HDs coming out I always think how horrible it would be if that HD died. I usually burn out my anime, mangas and etc to DVDs to have a hardcopy.
But even then, DVDs will develop dye fade errors as time goes by so you cannot rely on them 100%. My backup for that is an external HD which gives me faster access to all those backed-up data.
Imho, RAIDing your HDs is just a waste of money. DVDs + ext HD is a much cheaper solution.
alkanphel added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 4:26 amI watch it, keep it for like 3 months, then delete it when I need space for more anyway. I wish I had a bigger Harddrive…. only 40GB ![]()
lol at alvinz. You seem to have the exact problem i have….
<– only have 40gb too.
Impz added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 7:23 amI put everything onto my 300GB internal HDD and when the series is completed I burn it on DVD…
andy added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 7:29 amOuch! That happened to me once. I lost almost 120GB of data when my 3.25 soratech portable HDD casing exploded (the capcaitor inside got burnt). Since then i made it a pt to always burn my stuffs on DVDs.
Model_X added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 7:43 amWhen I read this post I think my heart stopped for a sec… I keep alot of my anime on my 80 gig harddrive ready to burn onto DVD. On normal circumstances my ISP lets me download only 10 gigs a months yes thats right ONLY 10 gigs a month including upload data. If I were to lose a HD like you did i’d lose 5-8 months worth of downloaded data, I pay around $50 a month so that would mean id lose $250-$400 AUD worth of DATA. So lets all prety this never and i mean NEVER EVER EVER happens to me lol…hehe…or anyone else ^^
TokiDoki added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 9:26 amCouple of weeks ago when finals were over i started hearing a funny noise on my 300gb HDD. I have 2 3oogb and i 80gb. One of the 300gb Hdds can hibernate on its own so that it can avoid being burnt out, however the other one started making a funny noise and then i just freaked out when i started reading all this stuff online about folks whos hdd just died and how they lost a massive amount of anime. so i started buying a shitload of blank dvds and i have been burning like crazy. Its pain in the ass but believe me id rather it be a pain and have all my anime than lost it all.
Staples is having a sale of 50 blank DVD+R for only 20 bucks. I bought like 3 of those last week.
U can also recover all the anime u lost but it would cost u like a 100 bucks if u go to bestbuy.
Kauldron26 added these pithy words on Jan 15 07 at 9:58 amTokiDoki ^_^ $50 for 10GB isn’t worth it. You should apply for the TPG ADSL2+ service. It’s like $50 a month for $18 GB. I’m on the $60 for 30GB plan… yet somehow the download limit seems not enough. Have no idea what my brothers download ![]()
External HDD! I do keep my anime series in my 100gb external hdd! Burning them to DVD is a bother. I used to burn it on CD-Rs before I have my external hdd. I also experienced storing it on my main disk drive and after the pc got invaded with viruses, I had no choice but to delete all of the series I had in the hd.
samejima added these pithy words on Jan 29 07 at 7:30 amI have to use CD-Rs to burn my anime on, as my DVD burner won’t let me burn AVI or any of the other fansub formats.
I do plan on upgrading the DVD burner. That would make things much more simple. I have to do something soon though, as I’m running out of space on the hard drive quickly.
Moeu added these pithy words on Jan 29 07 at 11:05 amPost is pretty old but I thought I would put in my two bits. I have a 500gb softmodded xbox running Xbox media center. I store all my anime on that. It gives me the best of both worlds, Great storage and the ablity to view all my shows on my HD set.
american cowboy added these pithy words on Mar 11 07 at 12:56 am…50 gb. Wait, wrong, 500 gb????
what in the #^@#$^#$^#$^#$^#$^#$^34?
Impz wants a 500gb hdd too. It’s so admirable.
Impz added these pithy words on Mar 11 07 at 1:41 amunfortunately I dropped my portable hd today, lost about the same amount as you did. cant express in words how annoyed I was… but ye its annoying because its not that I don’t burn to dvd its just that a dvd is 4.5 gigs or so and you kinda have to wait until you have that amount of the same series to fill it, hence the chance of losing the content that you are keeping up to date with (anime that is in the progress of finishing) all in one go.
