K-Drama: Which Star Are You From?

Which Star Are You From is a Korean drama which speaks of a man who fell for a pair of sisters (one dead, one living) and the amount of pressure and objections they face throughout their entire relationship.

The drama begins depicting footage from the past between a pair of lovebirds, Seung-Hee (a film director) and Hye-Soo (a musical student). He lost her (Hye-Soo) in a car accident which he indirectly caused 3 years ago and since then, has been unable to let go of their past together. Just when he thought he’d pick up from where he left off in life (3yrs fast forward) and goes scouring for filming sites with great filmography, he meets Bok Sil (a country girl) who exactly resembles his dead girlfriend.

Seung-Hee follows Bok Sil home to the countryside and is bewildered by her mannerisms and living conditions. Throughout his stay at her countryside home, he gets to learn more about her and her mom whose a little retarded. Due to her mom’s health conditions, Bok Sil has no choice but to leave little GangWon province for Seoul in bid to raise money for her mom’s operation.

Unbeknownst to them, after having gone through so much together in GangWon and in Seoul (Bok Sil is employed as Seung-hee’s assistant), never would they least expect what fate has installed for them.

It turns out that Bok Sil is in fact Hye-Rim – Hye Soo’s youngest sister who got lost in a fire in a restaurant many years ago. Bok Sil gets reunited with her estranged mother and finds her life changing before her. She finds it hard to handle her double identities and things get worse when she learns of the relationship between the director and her elder sister (Hye-Soo). She questions her true identity – Hye Rim or Bok Sil and her heart gets broken repeatedly from her mother’s objections and Seung Hee’s rejections.

Just when Seung Hee finally embraces her love for him and his for her, Hye-Rim’s mother interrupts and tries to keep them apart from one another – even to the point of sending Hye-Rim to the states. Despite their acknowledgement of love for one another (Seung Hee & Bok Sil/Hye-Rim), they were kept apart from one another from all the obstacles and barriers that were hurled at them.

My opinions:

What I really liked of this series was its different approaches in the storyline aka not your typical k-drama where girl likes boy, boy likes another girl, then drama ensuing. It’s refreshing to see how the story develops and to see the transformation in Bok Sil’s country girl outlook (though that didn’t happen till very much later. Damn!). I like how they portrayed the relationship between Bok Sil and her adopted mom, the close-kitted bonds and fear of losing one another.

The part of her adopted mother made me wonder if it was ethical for that adopted mother to take Bok Sil away just cause she lost her real child in the carbon monoxide poisoning incident. But then, we can never really understand how it feels to lose a child until we’ve been through it. I really felt for Bok Sil’s adopted mother because of her little retarded-ness and simplicity.

The importance and kinship between families that was clearly depicted in this series was really heart-warming though it tends to get depressing sometimes. I like the innocence portrayed by Bok Sil/Hye-Rim, a simple country girl who just wants to lead a quiet life in the countryside with her mother. Her grounded and optimistic outlook on life even after so much have happened to her was very much depicting this phrase – ‘every cloud has a silver lining’.

Apart from familial issues, this series also displayed the clear existence in the disparity of social classes today. One can definitely identify the reason why Bok Sil’s birth-mom was so keen on tearing apart [Seung-Hee/Hye-Soo] and [Seung-Hee/Hye-Rim] – due to their different backgrounds and status in society.

This drama deserves props for carrying such a different story and for displaying reality in its truest form. I’ve read reviews from people who cried a lot over this drama, which didn’t happen to me, surprisingly. Not a single tear shed, I don’t know if it’s because of the immunity level built up from all the weepy Korean dramas I’ve watched before or something else? –shrugs-

In short, this drama is enjoyable and touching, littered with funny scenes between the 2 main leads. There wasn’t a single b*tchy third party that clamoured all over the leads and for once, it isn’t all about the love triangles.

Oh and truthfully.. i didn’t want to watch this drama cos i thought it was some lame-old-boring series.. and when i finally caught the first episode i thought, “Heyyy.. this isn’t as bad as i thought it would be..” haha. :] and i just continued maranthoning it. =D and its title actually reminded me of aliens @_@ OOT but yah.

    It’s such a lovely drama. I like it so much. Kim Rea Won and Jung Ryeo Won’s acting so moved. I hope they will appear together in many other drama. And they look so great together.

    I’m in the middle of watching this drama (ep. 11) and I’ve got to say, Rae Won really delivers! He’s such a good actor and partnered up with Ryeo Won, they just make such an amazing tandem. Also, there’s another hottie on the how, who I really love.

    I’m surprised at myself for being hooked on Korean dramas! Growing up in a predominantly English-speaking environment, I’m probably the last person to chase Chinese dramas(albeit translated & with subtitles to boot!)but I’m totally impressed with how some Korean dramas can pull our heartstrings with thier plots, acting and music.I’ve watched Full House, Love In Harvard, My Girl and now Which Star Are You From? on cable TV. I must say Kim Rae Won’s acting skills are really superb. Can anyone recommend other dramas starring Kim Rae Won that are worth sacrificing my beauty sleep?? Hahaha…..

    ya! really nice out of standing, i loooooooooooove this drama, ya bokshi,she perform very nice, and sweet too, ya kim rae woo, ya i really appiciate his performance, these two are nice couple in this drama, ummmmmmmm….specially korean people are much look like tibetan people, because of their social enviroment, the most think i like the korean people is there are very clean, thanks for this drama

    This drama chummal best!! i started watching the first episode yesterday and already finished it todaY!! their chemistry is damn good. and ryu-won’s crying scene really looks real.. its as if u are watching a true story.. hope to see both of them pairing together in many dramas later on.. =)

    I became a big fan of Kim Rae Won since the Love in Harvard series and enjoying every minute of Which Star Are You From. Both the lead actor/actress had acted so well that I could feel it in my heart.

    I’m not a tv favourite but will not miss any good Korean movies. The strength of Koreans love stories is in the storyline combined with rich Asian values/culture such as gentleness, decency, sweetness and reserved.

    I have given up on the western love stories above 18 which depicts nothing else but over exposer, lust and the sickening sex craze.

    Hi Noor, I totally agree with you! Watching Korean dramas is like walking down a lane of Asian values and culture. Hollywood movies are mostly about greed, violence lust & sex these days. With all due respect, even HK movies / dramas have to take a back seat to Korean productions. HK productions try too hard; they want to integrate a complicated plot woven with many sub-plots & spin-offs etc. Something’s gotta give…and I guess the development of each character, feelings, personalities are all sacrificed in the process of diversification.

    Korean movies, on the other hand, move slower and more beautifully. They give proper exposure to the character’s development along with the plot. The highlight of course, is the music! How on earth did someone come up with such acoustic beauty as an intricate part of the story to tug at our heartstrings??

    To my Malaysian pals, a peek into the ending for you……….Let’s just say ‘All’s well that ends well’ & ‘Love Conquers All’!!!

    I’m glad this Korean drama will hit the Philippines by next week. I hope the Filipinos will like it. The plot is different and it’s nice. I wish the Koreans produce more and more Korean dramas….

    It’s really touching n attract my feeling to feel that what they felt..
    I really like when the scene the hero and the heroin fighting..
    It’s really sweet and funny…

    I was really shock when I found out that Bok sil(Ana)and Hye Rim(Korine)were sisters.     OH MY! i just finished watching it.. and even though im done watching, it still made me think of the series more.. it was really really great! its funny and sweet.. they’re always fighting, (well considering their age gap..) boksil is childish while seung-hye is so matured.. i just love the way the fight and make up.. SSWWWEEETT! oops, i have to stop or else i’d tell the whole story ehehehe.. its different from other korean series indeed, no more love triangles, just plainly the pure love for each other.. so i recommend for everybody to watch it, i tell you, you wont regret it! =) AJA AJA Fighting!

    this is a very touching series.It made me cry, laugh and reminisce.I love the chemistry of the lead stars. Kim rae won is hot and acts naturally, I can say that to Bok Sil too. It was like they’re a pair in real life when you watch them. Very enjoyable and will touch your hearts. It did to mine.

    i just finished watching the movie. i like it very,very much as well as the main casts! they’re so cute and bagay talaga. sana sila sa real life… the story was different from the other korean movies. whatever happens,they really fight their love.ooohhh….nakaka-in love, az in….!

    What Star are You From is the best korean telenovela i have seen. it’s so funny, romantic and touching. Kim Rae Won and Jung Ryu Won are very good actors, they look good together. I hope they will be paired again in another telenovela in the future.

    Because of ABS-CBN network we, in the Philippines were able to watch a heart pounding drama in tv. Though I keep myself awake at 10pm, I see to it that I don’t miss any episode.     many korean dramas made me amazed but this one is totally and honestly different…although there will be some korean dramas that will surely come, still, this story “which star are you from” is unforgettable….
    if you’ve watch this, maybe there’s a bit change in your life..
    the story would be a reflection to everybody’s life or experience..
    i like the characters in this series who played their role truly!!it’s nice to watch this kind of drama because it would make you a realization…

    i love to watch the story over and over and over again!!

    I am really amazed at how much this Drama warmed my heart!… honestly, I am not into love story and mushy, chummy stuff but surprisingly this one got me straight through the heart!
    Won-won team up makes the drama realistic…it’s as if they’re not acting but a real life sweethearts! I love the sensitivity of Kim Rae-Won’s character and the essence of beauty depicted by Jeong Ryeo-Won. I love every bits of this show.
    It’s only recently that this drama was shown here in the Philippines and there’s already a lot of local fanatics screaming for more of WON-WON TEAM-UP!!!!

    i am not actually an avid fan of korean dramas… until i get to watch this drama thru dvd wd subtitles in english for 17 hours just for one day! imagine ,i start watching this around 11:00 o’clock in the evening and i finished it between 4 or 5 in the afternoon… so gnun q xa tinutukan!though, i wasn’t able to understand their language i was still amazed by the 2 main leads,, bcoz of the way they act,they are really good actors and actress!and they really touched my heart and makes me feel like im part of it…
    i hope their tandem will keep going coz they really have a good chemistry!
    kim rae won – u are so cute! and jung ryu won – u are so gorgeous!
    to the writers and directors – please come up with a PART 2 of this!

    well, its really good and nakakatawa at nakakakilig…all the casts were good actresses and actors. the whole setting and story were very realistic. the true situation of the society this days were really presented here. i just wonder wat will be the ending.. hindi ko pa kc ito nkikita sa DVD..so i just keep on subaybay in the television..cud you please post in the internet even the synopsis of the story or synopsis of each episode for us to have hints about the ending..? plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………….

But unlike everybody what I am really watching here is Aning’s relationship with her moms. I really wonder if ever in real this really happens. Siguro nakakalito din. Ang ganda ng korean movies, they’re so conservative talaga. In fact I haven’t seen any love scenes yet in any k-novelas that I’ve watched! Unlike sa Americans bihira ang wala.hehe. Kaya lang they’re (korean) fond of tragic endings. Di ba? Buti na lang this is diffrent. I’m very sure that this will have a very shining, shimmering ending.cge po!

    I love this koreanovela very much, they make me cry and laugh.
    i hope maraming mga tao ang titingin sa koreanovela na ito.
    You know Jeremy choi (Kim Rae Won) and Anna Kim (Jeung Ryu Won) is a Good actor and actress.
    Although I thought that the Princess Hours is the most beautiful koreanovela but its not because Which star are you from is the most beautiful koreanovela in the whole world.

    At first I didn’t like the story of Which Star Are You From? probably because i was comparing it to princess hours. But after the first week of the series, i fell in love with the characters of the story. They all have their strengths as well as their weak points. The lead actress really did a great job in potraying the characters of Koreen and Angeline. You can definitely distinguish the sweet koreen from the funny and high spirited angeline. Kim Rae Won aside from his good looks really protrayed well the character of Director Choi. Which Star Are You from was indeed not just your typical Korean telenovela.

    i was not a big fan of telenovelas but this one really made me sat down for 16 hours and 46 minutes, being so excited and touch by every scene and situation. i’m really touched by the story and the never ending chasing, running, crying and sweet moments between the director and buk sil makes me feel light and even cry. thanks guys… i love it.

    I am not a regular korean telenovela watcher. I have watched some like My Girl, Lovers in Paris and Memories of … I forgot the title and I find these love stories all in good taste and distinctly exciting. But when I saw this Which Star Are You From, gosh this love story just hit me!! I couldn’t believe myself watching it in the dvd one night hoping to finish but I didn’t realize it was so inviting, hilarious, romantic that it was already past dawn and the sun then was up in the morning. Terrible but true. I just kept it a secret that I didnt fall asleep because of this film.

    Truly I enjoyed the two lead stars especially the director who moves and walks like a ramp model, with height and looks so appealing that would displace a lot of male actors in the industry. Suddenly Korea fascinated me to consider visiting it sometime like he World Cup Stadium and the many tall buildings and beautiful sites …all because of my fascination for .. (funny to say)… the director or actor Kim Rae Won.

    Hope he gets featured more esp. about his personality, his gigs and film projects…hmm crazy love

    I really like this korean movie… napakaganda nya sobra… na iinlove ako sa story ng movie na ‘to… lalong lalo na kung pinapakinggan ko ang songs ng which star are ou from… i always fall in love with this songs… it helps me to remember my love one….

    I agree with all of you. Which Star Are You From is a very good k-novela (I watched it on DVD in Korean with English subtitles. I wished I’ve seen it in tagalog version, I wasn’t even sure if it was shown on TFC here in US). It is one of my favorites. The 2 leads have chemistry. I first saw Kim Rae Won in Love Story in Harvard. I fell in love with his acting and his looks. He’s very handsome, he’s charming, versatile and charismatic. I started watching more of his projects. I’ve seen most of his dramas (Love Story in Harvard,Which Star Are You From?, Say You Love Me, My Love Patzzi, Attic Cat or Rooftop Room Cat) and movies (My Little Bride, Mr. Socrates, Sunflower, …ing and yes, even Plum Blossom). I love him in all of those. He’s an excellent actor and can portray any kinds of roles. He’s a model too.
    Here are some new facts about KRW: He was baptized Catholic last November 2007, he’s Catholic name is “Joseph”. This year, 2008 he will open his own company “Bless Entertainment Company”, he is currently with Blue Dragon Entertainment Co.
    According to one of my friends in Thailand who went to Kim Rae Won’s Fan Mtg in Seoul,Korea last Dec.22,2007, Kim Rae Won is better in person. He’s tall and very handsome but most of all he’s very cheerful(he smiles a lot), very friendly, approachable and he loves his fans. My friend said that he’s very good to his fans and he’s a very cool person. Sorry for this very long post…

    Wah…… I agree 100% with your thoughts. I fell in love with this drama.. It revamped my KIM RAE WON days..^^ I was just surprised @ how you didn’t shed one tear… HOW?? Oh my….. I shed many. haha. Especially watching those scenes of HyeRim/BokShil cry… RyeoWon just does a wonderful job at crying. So real and natural. And when SeungHui shows his hurt and pain, it touches me as well… I just love everything about this drama. It is, in fact, my favorite. =) Lovely summary you did. =)

    ei!!! this is very touching drama…you know what kim rae won has a movie titled “plum blossom” he played a very very hot role there,,, he is the main character there but… i actually saw his butt… hahahhh very hot just watch it okey… heres the website you have to sign up first and its 18 above

    Enjoyed this drama 100%. But if they have add a few more episodes between Seung Hee & Hyo Soo in the beginning would be marvelous rather than just a brief one.
