Kanon episode 5 clearly displays an unique side to the harem gathering genre.

Here is Yuuichi’s famous steps of discovery when an anime male lead actively searches to gather as big a harem as possible.

—————————————-

Attack 1: Nayuki

vlcsnap-88123-resize.jpg

This is the episode where we saw Yuuichi being out of the stereotype. As we all know, most harem male leads do have a female character that is always on home waiting for him. This is well known as the “childhood friend” syndrome in shows where there is always a hot and cuddly cute childhood friend. Look, his first step of discovery is achieved as Nayuki faithfully welcomes him home after he went to school to have a date with the hot silent chick, Yuki Nagato with long hair and a sword Mai.

*The actual truth is that he went to pick up books for Nayuki, which is another sweet thing to charm her heart*

And…

Attack 2: Makoto

vlcsnap-88336-resize.jpg

Then, he goes into the bath, with Makoto inside. Using the excuse that he was tired and did not realize it, he showed his naked body to Makoto, leaving her shocked and gasping over his body. That harem loving Yuuichi has once again captured another girl, this time, poor sweet and cute Auuuu~ Makoto.

vlcsnap-88365-resize.jpg

See, even Makoto agrees. Rawr!

(and yes, I photoshopped it to make it look like the font used…I ain’t too bad with deception, no?)

Attack 3: Mai

vlcsnap-88774-resize.jpg

And then he tricks Mai into a confession of love via his evil schemes. See, I really wonder if there’s a selection basis for his harem. For one, the girls must be in snow because sad girls in snow are cute. However, the problem also comes when you will stop collecting. For Yuuichi, it seems that his philosophy in life is “There’s never enough.”

So there you go, he goes around trying to silently win over Mai by getting her to talk and making her interested in him. It seemed he succeeded, since they were eating lunch together. With that said, the next target of Yuuichi’s harem came in.

Attack 4: Sayuri

vlcsnap-89001-resize.jpg

Sayuri is my next fanboy target due to the fact that she holds two factors that make me think she is like Asa. Firstly, she has a really friendly personality. Second, any anime character that can cook gets an instant plus point for me because being able to cook “wicked good” in Kyon’s words is definitely good enough for me as well. She is also hit down by Yuuichi with his flirty words on making her his bride.

Man, Yuuichi’s words of love knows no bounds. On the count now, Yuuichi has successfully snagged Makoto, Ayu (not mentioned because she will stalk him anyway), Nayuki, Mai and now Sayuri.

5.

Damn it.

He has 5 gals in his harem.

Sayuri even said the answer herself that “all the girls in the world will be your bride”. IT’S HIS FRICKING INTENTION!!!

vlcsnap-88987-resize.jpg

And Sayuri is so happy over it. Sigh, you are being deceived!

Attack 5: Shiori

vlcsnap-89222-resize.jpg

The worst thing Yuuichi could do is to date a sickly chick that cannot be out in the cold. Now, he does it. She is all “Because i want to see you” and calling him “Oni-chan”. She also goes on about making a snowman that is 10 metres high.

She is really sick.

Man, does he have a loli fetish like some others in the anime community. I am sure there is because the following evidence is extremely compelling for my studies of Yuuichi as a dirty man.

vlcsnap-89281-resize.jpg

Asking Makoto to buy pron.

Now that’s a strange and serious problem. His fetishes are getting scary.

P/s: (No…I did not use photoshop for this)

[…] With ultra cute girls, a sarcastic harem master at the helm, and the king of beautiful animation KyoAni, what could go wrong with this show? Why aren’t you watching Kanon already? […]

Kanon 2006: Blast from the Past « added these pithy words on Nov 09 06 at 8:46 am

I might be alone in saying this, but… Yuuichi seriously annoyed me this episode. He carried his “jokes” a bit too far. After a while I didn’t find them funny.

Kanon 2006 has been a disappointment for me so far. Little story, shallow girls, and a guy who isn’t terribly likeable. I’d have to say AIR was a much better effort from this studio.

It would have to improve considerably from here on to meet the standards of AIR.

I think it’s a mistake to look for AIR in Kanon. The two are rather different in some very key aspects. One being, the kind of story each tells. They’re both tragic (or rather, it’s the tragic elements that make them attractive), make no mistake; but with AIR they can’t afford to beat around the bush like how they do it in Kanon. Especially with a lot of episodes to space it out amongst the 5 parallel branches in Kanon… Well, in 4 episodes or so we’ll see if KyoAni cuts it.

I agree omo, they’re as different as their seasons.

I didn’t care either way about his jokes, but they way he moved throughout the episode (ala girl-2-girl) was natural. Reminds me of that line from Fight Club .. ‘f%%*ker was settin’ up franchises’

This is why I call him Yuuichi “three times sexier than the normal harem lead” Aizawa. He has approached godly levels of pimping.

Demian added these pithy words on Nov 05 06 at 6:17 pm

i think personally on omo’s point is very true. This is not AIR and will never be AIR. AIR, if I may make a rather absurd and inaccurate view, is more of a tragic element that hits you right at the spot. No matter whether you know the character or not, Mizusu will still be cried for.

I have not watched Kanon before or know it’s ending, but I honestly feel that each character has a story to tell, their own sad story (yes, sad girls in snow) to Yuuichi. that, to me, is why they started off with a happy start, to contrast and slowly bring the audience to each story.

Once it started, it will probably be wow-ness. Kanon to me is like a story who starts slow, but ends it with a bang.

Air was good, Kanon is better. And I think Yuuichi’s character is a good one; who wants a boring, stereotypical harem keeper as the main character?

Danny added these pithy words on Nov 05 06 at 7:05 pm

What I find interesting about this Yuuichi is that he is actively looking for girls rather than waiting for them to come to him.

wererat42 added these pithy words on Nov 05 06 at 9:04 pm

yea, that’s my point ^_^

Which i think is a good thing, because that simply means he’s a pimpster out and out ^+^

Impz added these pithy words on Nov 05 06 at 9:12 pm

I’m not looking for AIR 2… I’m looking for compelling characters and plot.

So far it’s trailing AIR on both counts.

dsong added these pithy words on Nov 05 06 at 10:23 pm

Well, it’s still too early to judge Kanon based on only 5 episodes. I have faith in Kyoto Animation to pull this one’s ending into an awesome one, just like Air did.

deltazechs added these pithy words on Nov 05 06 at 11:06 pm

i will also add that the thing is that they can afford to flesh out the characters this way, since they have more episodes to play around, unlike AIR that only has 13 episodes. So i would not think it’s that fast to be judged.

To add, I also remember shuffle being a totally -_- series until the mid part, when the drama came in. Then, it came to me that the start is simply to set up the mood. Perhaps (i speak), it might be that case.

impz added these pithy words on Nov 06 06 at 1:10 am

Air had 12 episodes to play with. :P Ep13 was a recap session. Air also had one main heroine with 2 sub-heroines to introduce, along with their respective sub-characters.

Kanon has 24 episodes to play with. Exactly double that of Air. However… unlike Air, they are planning to have five main heroines, along with their respective sub-characters. So it is only understandable that the introduction/familiarisation phase is extra-long as well.

I mean really. Cut short the characterisation and people say they are not developed enough. Expand on it, and people say they are taking too long. As the saying goes, you can’t please everybody. :P

Cheers.

You do have a point, but I feel that Kanon through 5 episodes has accomplished less than AIR through 2-3 episodes. Since Kanon is twice as long, I feel this IS a valid comparison.

Sometimes I get the feeling that KyoAni is trying pull a Da Capo on us - go with the mundane fluffy stuff for ~15 episodes then bombard us for the last 10.

As long as they eventually get to the tragedy and don’t pull any punches, I will be reasonably satisfied.

dsong added these pithy words on Nov 06 06 at 2:47 am

I’m warming up to this version of Kanon now. I find myself being entertained and I get a few smiles out of the show. The only copmplaints I guess I would have are that Yuiichi sometimes acts like a total nerd, but something about him makes him likable. Also this series doesn’t get me emotionally like the old one did (I think its one of the few shows anime or american that has made me tear up) but it’s still early so I shouldn’t whine about that.

Chris added these pithy words on Nov 14 06 at 12:45 pm

I dunno, I enjoy how they’re intertwining the 5 or so different paths together. It’s really quite nice IMO story-wise. Sure, it still does feel slightly rushed at certain instances (the barrage of girls thrown at you + girl backgrounds), but the show is still understandable.

I guess I’m just wondering how Kyoani will portray the gradual progression from this semi-cheerful beginning to the more

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
depressing ending. . especially since it seems really different from what I’ve heard of Toei’s version of Kanon in that there was a happy happy Ayu ending. Right now, it does seem that the story might result in Ayu (my personal opinion). . even so, I guess we’ll see. . especially with the Makoto arc coming up right now.

ya know…
im gonna have to go ahead and say that i dont see yuichi as a pimp or harem maker. for one he doesnt lead girls on and then ditch them, rather everyone except for shiori is connected to him in some major way. makoto technically doesnt count as a girl decieved by him since she was a fox and sought him out. albeit for revenge. each storyarc deals with that girl in particular. for example when playing through the mai storyarc there was very little ayu interaction and slight makoto interaction. shiori never came onto the scene and akkikos accident was mentioned in passing. no, kanon never was about a harem (if you want a true harem go take a peek at shuffle! its a harem anime with a clear resolution)
now if youll excuse me im gonna play out makotos storyline on the visual novel
