Note: I figured out how to take screenshots in MPC without having time log, YAY TO ME! I also added a new feature for real episode reviews (not the parodies) which is the episode rating. I hope the rating can give a better indication of how much I like the episode.

The translation of the subbed in Chinese for this screenshot wrote: Then for what reason do we live this way, having to do this thing in order to survive.

That is so true. This show keeps getting better and better in my opinion. The graphics dipped a little at times but generally, it’s pretty good quality stuff here, with nice flashbacks and powerful moral issues presented in this show. I am fully enjoying this and without further ado for those who cannot watch raws/read chinese, here’s the episode summary~.

Episode 4 rating: A

Episode summary

Lu and her assistant were talking about the girls, with the assistant asking Lu to be less harsh on them since they might survive and carry on. Lu said that the gut feeling of the assistant was always wrong as the scene changed to Kate rushing to school. She was late but the student council president forgave her and asked her to take care because she assumed that Kate was affected by Lisa’s death.

With that, she also informed Kate that the police came to see her. Kate did not say anything much about Lisa’s case but she did gasp when the police asked whether there was anything strange about the behavior of Lisa before she died. The senior police noticed it but did not press Kate as they left the school. The senior officer, after being out of the school, told the other officer to check out on Kate because she might have something to do with the case.

Kate and Rose were up at the school balcony, talking about their experiences after their deaths. They spoke about forcing themselves to be busy, so that they had no time to think and that Rachel and Claire were doing the same even if they were not at school. We also see Claire with a cut scene searching for a place with a map on her hand (probably the place that they died).

Claire then suggested to visit the other two to see how they were. As they reached Rachel’s place, she dissed them and said that looking at them made her mood worse. Rachel laughed further when they said they left school earlier when they were already dead. They did not need to go to school and the likes. Rachel lastly added that she did not remember knowing them that well, not as a friend and definitely never went out with them.

They then tried to visit Claire, who was staying in a rather “shady” area but she was not at home. She was in fact trying to hunt down the mansion and the mansion actually looked quite different. They then sat down on a grass field, enjoying and talking about life in general. Rose said she never traveled, never dated or did so many things before she “died”. However, Kate mentioned that they were still alive and the fact that they were seeing things and enjoying this peace for now meant that they were. The butterflies were appearing once again, calling them for the fight.

The television news was also presenting the three casulaties (one of the gals was Rachel’s friend) and saying how this series of deaths were similiar in nature. Rachel was also breaking down as her boyfriend was asking her about her change of behavior and thought that she was seeing someone else. She could not tell him. As they were gathered, they were told to kill the man-beast again.

The three of them fought, with Claire charging ahead with a baseball bat, with Kate fighting desperately too. Rose was as usual, crouching down in fear. Rachel stood afar, thinking what they were doing now. Eventually, she took the baseball bat that was on her feet and simply went berserk as she killed the man-beast viciously with the baseball bat. She continued to hit the man-beast even after blood was flowing and the man was definitely dead.

Eventually, they stopped her as she asked why they were living and having to do this every single day. A cut scene and it was Lu telling the assistant that his gut feeling was correct and that they did win.

Thoughts

Ok, I found the ending scene of Rachel going totally bonkers and smashing the guts out of the man to be a really disturbing thought. It is one thing to see violence from psychos. It is another thing to see someone who is fearful and generally scared to death to smash the living lights out of a man-beast. The whole thought disturbs me with the point in which a person could be pushed so much to the limits that she acts against her own will.

All out of the four gals, it seemed that the most fragile one must be Rachel. It is surprising that Kate and Rose are taking it well but that is also because they depend on each other, supporting each other’s mental state even though they are fearful of their future. However, Rachel and Claire are rejecting support. As we can see, Rachel is building a wall around her mind, not allowing anyone to protect or alleivate her pain. She feels that she is dead and when you think that you are dead, you are.

That is why she acts so strong with the rest, disliking them so much even though she is the one that fears the most. She is not accepting the truth at all and wants to abandon her life. It is really painful to see someone like Rachel hurt so badly and turning bad. I really hope the rest of the gals can give her some support before she loses it.

Remember in my last post I mentioned about hypnosis?

I think that my random prediction might actually come through. The fact that Rachel said something like “Am I friends with you before? Have i ever done things together with you all?” part disturbs me. If I remember correctly, the cut scene during the hunt of Lisa showed the four gals to be a very close bunch of friends. However, it seems that these four gals never knew each other (i mean to be so chum with each other) before the whole incident.

If so, the scene is totally queer, don’t you think? I mean, think it logically through. You have four girls in four different kinds of environment and cliques. That said, Claire does not even come to school for christ’s sake. That means that the amount of interaction should be minimal, which makes it suspicious for the flashback to be true. Are they really dead or are they experimented to believe that they are dead?

Now, I have a lot of doubts now whether the flashback with the red flowers and all is true. Lisa is dead, yes, but there are definitely plot holes with this thing. I hope it is not an oversight by Gonzo but a mystery to be solved later.

Anyway, Red Garden is getting better and better. It is probably not a crime to say that for now, it is turning out to be the best show, other than Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto.

There are definitely a huge amount of mystery surrounding the flashback that they had seen. Moreover the best part about this show is that it explores the human state of mind without neglecting the original plot and retaining its suspense.
Love the fact that it is getting intriguing.

wohooo … rachael goes berzerk … soon we will see each of them having their own limit break .. lol

well no matter .. its better that they display violent tendancies instead of the learned helplessness of those girls in ep 3

@S: Yes, that is the thing that makes Red Garden special among all the crap out there for the fall season. Oh wellz. The thing too is that they have this very powerful plot and remember, we still do not know the whole purpose for this experiment. I doubt they will answer it too soon.

@Ala: YES! THEY WILL HAVE LEVEL 1 MIST BREAK first! Ok, jokes aside, i think the violent tendencies part, if played nicely, will be very disturbing. Imagine Rose turning all savage. I might have some niggling thoughts about the man-beast but i will reserve my speculation until i watch more =/

I don’t think the girls are close to each other before Lise’s death. The flashback only showed that Lise went out with the girls individually. It was never shown that the girls went out together as a group. They barely knew each other, and the only link between them was Lise. I don’t think they ever went out together until that night they went to search for Lise and got killed.

”Then for what reason do we live this way, having to do this thing in order to survive”

Shouldnt it be something like
”Do we just live to do something like this?”
