THAT Animeblog

THAT blog of various wonders!

Why I haven’t started and won’t be blogging Le Chevalier D’Eon

Instead of explaining myself with words, I’m going to let the following screenshots do the talking.

Examine, ladies and gentlemen, Exhibit A taken from episode 2 of the show:

Doesn’t that look nice? Now take a look at Exhibit B taken from episode 4:

deon04.jpg

Wha… what is this? What happened?

Production I.G., you disappoint and sadden me. I’ll continue to follow d’Eon, but my respect for I.G. has just gone down the drain. It’s true that few company can maintain the same consistent quality throughout an entire series – why else is Kyoto Animation so highly esteemed? – but to drop the ball so hard in episode 4 is simply unacceptable

On the other hand, occasionally there’s some pretty cool facial distortions (not to be confused by ‘emo facial contortions’, as popularised by Jason Miao of AoMM fame), as demonstrated by Shinobuden:

Episode 1 (and most of the show):

Episode 9 second half:

Isn’t the second Shinobu-chan so much cuter?

Art is secondary.. but Chevalier is godly boring.

Then again, IG did GitS:SAC so they own.

Actually, I prefer the puni puni Shinobu… but that’s me…

Clearly, they changed the color scheme to reflect the low light of the street at night. It’s not a mistake, and I found, watching the episodes, that it worked quite effectively to maintain the atmosphere of the setting.

It’s not new to IG though, when they did GITS:SAC, the Major’s face was drawn quite differently in almost every episode. I remember seeing a picture that compiled at least 20 unique and different faces of her from the anime.

Well, thats cel-shading for you. at different angles, the pics can look markedly different from one another.

anyways, i do believe i’ll still follow chevalier. chances are it may end up my fav series of the summer season.

facial expressions aside, it probably has one of the most beautiful art direction and backgrounds i’ve ever seen. and although this is a historical anime, the story still intrigues and it prob has some of the most deep character development in any anime i’ve ever seen.

but most importantly, androgyny rawks. ^___^

Is that really true cel-shading? I thought the true cel-shading is like the Appleseed movie.

  7. negativzero October 28th, 2006 8:04 pm

not really sure, but it looks uncannily like cel-shading.

  8. alkanphel October 28th, 2006 10:34 pm

Well I’m not convinced about it being cel-shaded but it does look computer-shaded.

TJ: I actually think the story is quite interesting, or at least as far as I’ve seen it anyway.

kacpy: Sifness… pointy chin Shinobu ftw.

The rest of you: It’s not the colour… I have nothing against the colours. The faces in that second d’Eon pic just look absolutely terrible. That stuff is to be expected, but I really can’t accept having it happen so early on in the live span of a show. If it keeps going like this it’ll end up looking like it was drawn by a 3 years old.

    LOL I didn’t even notice that…

That’s why everyone’s been saying that the animation has been dropping as of late. Meh, even with that one fault, it’s still a great series.

Nah as an overall, the animation line-art quality of Chevalier has been slowly dropping ever since the superb first episode.
