[...] Impz: It is my wish, kind sir, to learn about the mysteries of owning a DVD. After seeing others before me hitting euphoria over their purchase, I have learnt that as an anime reviewer, it is of need to at least own something that is anime related. I have nothing that can achieve this greatness (especially this certain lack of MONEY!) and I want to own something of worth. Hellsing is hence my key to success in the anime world! If I can earn this honor, I will no longer have to hide beyond the darkness of my shadows. I can proudly proclaim that I am no longer a potaku, but a man that has something of value, something that is earned honestly through my two hands! [...]

Hmmm... I'm no potaku, but I'll use a term I like during my gaming days: I'm a casual hardcore/otaku. I have other interest besides looking up the skirt of my 1/6 scale Tessa figure or spending godly amounts on overpriced anime cels... errr... that didn't come out right. ^_^;;

To put it in "my" thinking of what constitutes a casual otaku, I'll use your potaku examples.

1. I'm poor most of the time. Yet, I've got a savings account building up nicely for the past few months. By the looks of it, I can go on a holiday for a week somewhere. I spend smartly. Rightstuf.com is your friend and accept 30% off SRP as your standard! :D

2. Yeah, I know quite a few seiyuus and English VAs that I can easily place which roles they have done. As for my Japanese skills, I know as much as the next potaku, however I've barely got the hang of hiragana and know quite a few kanjis (namely to recognise the characters/shows when browsing Amazon.jp). And yes, I prefer it if people explain stuff to me. Better to be stupid and not say anything than proving you are stupid by saying something. :D

3. You won't see me caught dead with my Chii (Chobits) T-Shirt outside of my house. And if you do, I'll inflict the Sonozaki house of pain on j00!

But take heart! Don't be ashame to be known as a potaku! Go forth and spread this message!

Well, I think I'd very much rather spend my money on friends, family, leisure, etc...
being a potaku(jan, how the **** did you come up with this) doesn't mean you have to be poor, nor does it mean you do not have the knowledge or the accesories. because as far as i am concerned, there is more to life than just anime and manga. and sadly if you are some crazed anime addict i think your life is kinda sad...
watch NHK and you'll understand what i mean...
go out and enjoy the fresh air, go down to the beach, have a swim, enjoy cholesterol-giving nachos and steaks at a restaurant, thats what i call life.
so to me, a potaku would be one who really, doesn't have his life revolve around anime and manga.. :p

So basically a potaku is just a poor western/american substitute for otaku?

...wahahahahaha! i wonder, since we are all potakus in a way. I mean if you do have an anime blog (or read an anime blog enough to comment), your interest is already way at the level of a potaku....

Is it a progress or an evolution of idealogies that people go from potaku to otaku?

The answer is for you to decide.

Another question is that is otaku title actually something worth to pursue. It's not really my dream in life to waste last savings to get perverted plastic toys or tons of dvds I don't ever watch again anyway.
