Saiunkoku Monogatori Episode 9

Episode 9 was entertaining, even though there was not much action this time. This episode was probably an intermediate episode for character development, particularly for Ensei, as well as Kou Kijin, the eccentric treasure chamberlain of many masks (pun intended). Several new characters are introduced in this series, such as the “Uncle” (Kou Renshin) that would probably creep the serious hell out of me if I ever met him trying to be a lecher to a young poor Shuurei (or Shuu if you want)

The episode covered Shuurei’s role in the treasury, being a overworked, underpaid worker (god, this is so familiar). I laughed when she was given a whole lot of tasks to do and she was like all smiles. I probably go into frenetic psycho mode on the treasurer. Kou Kijin seemed to be a really capable man, which really fitted the stereotype of a genius: Smart but eccentric to the maximum. He also seemed to have a tender side to him during the rainstorm where he was comforting Shuu and he truly tried to understand Shuu, even though he knew that Shuurei was disguised as a gal.

The emperor had a cameo when he was like “Shuurei, are you here?”. I swear that he has the nose ability of a dog with that attempt to catch Shuurei. Shuurei, the girl with too much bishies. <3333

We also see the gay "Uncle" that was Shuurei's real uncle. At first impression, he seemed to be a comic relief just for the fun of it. The interaction between him and Kijin was very different though and I could feel this rather cold and dangerous persona within this man. I posted in Hopeless Sensei’s blog mentioning about this point that he would probably drop a stone at Shuurei to further his means. For now, he seemed to be less of an antagonist and more of a comic relief but I am not counting on it in the future.

I am also immensely curious about Ensei and who in the world he is. My guess is as good as anyone of you, so i will just wait and see.

Saiunkoku Monogatori is really turning out to be one of the hidden gems of the season and the amount of character complexity and development was proving to be a hit at least for me. For now, the only active group that is faithfully fansubbing this anime is We suck Fansubs, so do support them.

Can’t wait for the next episode to figure out about Ensei and Kou Kijin.
